“A fantastic place to stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2012

We (two couples) stayed in the largest apartment at the hotel. There was ample space in the apartment and the hotel's facilities and food were excellent. Best of all were the welcoming and friendly staff. We would stay there again even though we have relatives nearby. It is excellent value for money.

This place has it all. It's beautiful outside, sumptuous inside and is furnished to the highest standards imaginable.

I've stayed during the week for work and return for weekends away with my wife. I don't think I have ever done that anywhere before in my life.

The food is amazing and the service impeccable. At the weekend you can get a dinner bed and breakfast deal for £150 for two. Unbelievable value for this level of luxury.

The spa is nice and the more modern rooms on the extension are great, but the best bit is the "old house".

Trying to think of constructive criticism...could do with a swimming pool. That's it.

Genuine contender for best hotel in the country.

We stayed in the Lanes hotel on the 10th oct for 3 nights and could not have been happier. The hotel is lovely. We stayed in the Penthouse room and it was very nice with loads of space , the bathroom was stunning with a massive free standing bath and double shower , a real boutique bathroom. The food was amazing we had the the most perfect steak and and the the deserts are to die. The staff were all very friendly and the service was excellent. They have a spa with free access to the gym, sauna and jacuzzi we used the sauna and the jacuzzi which we really enjoyed as there was no one else in there. Free internet and a computer u could use 24hrs free of charge. Overall this is very very good hotel that we will most certainly visit again. Thanks to all at the Lanes.

Room Tip: we stayed in the Penthouse which is lovely but it overlooked the car park they had lots of rooms tha...

We stayed for two nights and were situated in the new part of the hotel - 'next door'. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and had an excellent meal, the guinea fowl was superb. The second night we had tapas in the bar and they too were excellent. The lounge was a great place to relax and play pool , this summed up the place really - informal but stylish. The hot stones massage was wonderful as were the beauty treatments. The small spa area was just right with an adequate gym, sauna and jacuzzi. The room was comfortable with a complimentary mini-bar and well stocked bathroom. A great place to stay for a rejuvenating mini-break.

We stayed here in August for my daughter's wedding. We stayed in the apartments and they are truly comfortable and well equipped. The staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us. All in all this was a lovely place to stay.

Room Tip: The apartments are good value for families

The facade is of the old sandstone mansion is really very pretty if you mentally block out the glass excrescences at either side. I'd prefer to block out my impression of the interior too: the original has been scooped out in favour of uncomfortably furnished glass and chrome. There is no proper reception - you have to run the gauntlet of the drinkers at the bar to find someone to book you in. I hate that.

I threw my travel weary self on to the bed and was surprised to feel the springs "bottom out". Closer inspection revealed a very thin mattress, with minimal padding, on an unupholstered hardboard-and-slat platform. Bottom of the range, in fact: the Mattison Hotel Defiant - purchase price £240 tops, I would say, including the base. It certainly defied finding a comfortable position. It looks as if by the time they converted the old house into a sort of Ikea showroom there was no money left for decent beds. A very false economy. Needless to say I slept very poorly. These ultra cheap open spring "contract" beds don't hold and stabilise the sleeper so you can never totally relax. A guest will spend more than half their time in bed and all the big chains from Ibis on up recognise this. It's a pity that smaller operators don't get the message.

I dined across the road (Royal George - recommended).

Hotel breakfast was OK. They insisted the small dyed, smoked mackerel fillets served were kippers, which they weren't, but I ate mine anyway.

The staff were generally pleasant and efficient throughout our stay.

If I read on TA that the Lanes have tossed their horrible beds and put something decent in, I'll consider a return visit, because it's well located for me. But not until.

My husband treated me to an overnight spa break at this fabulous hotel. The hotel is set in superb surroundings, with an on-site spa (book appts seperately). The room was spacious and very comfortable. Although small, the Spa had an impressive menu of treatments, and we had the gym, sauna and jacuzzi to ourselves. Staff were very friendly and helpful; we had a huge breakfast on the Sunday morning, with plenty of choice and excellent home-made granola. Yeovil is just down the road, and on Saturday evening we had a great meal at Malee Thai Restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Annex are quieter than the Main House, particularly if the hotel is catering for a wedd...
