“Wonderful food, warm welcome and lovely landlady”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2011

I have just returned from a week spent in Queen Camel with my husband and 2 daughters. We had a good time touring around beautiful Somerset. We rounded off each day with a meal at The Mildmay Arms, just a gentle stroll from our holiday cottage. The food was excellent, with a good choice of menu, well prepared and presented, no rush to get us to leave, we could have sat all evening. The staff are very polite and friendly and the landlady is lovely, so very warm and welcoming, even going to the trouble of arranging a special pudding to be made for my husband on our last night. We will all miss her now that we are home and hope to be able to return one day.

Made to feel totally welcome. From reading other reviews am disappointed we weren't able to sample the food as we were attending a wedding nearby. Large room with comfy bed and nice friendly atmosphere. Breakfast was perfectly acceptable and we were offered plenty of choice and refills. Lovely little village and would stay again.

Our second visit and again a most enjoyable experience.Have you eaten here yet? You really should, but only if you like superb food, beautifully cooked, and fine quality wine at a very reasonable price and with a very friendly welcome.
It is indeed a pleasure
to find such a treasure

I have nothing but praise for this establishment. We were a little early for an evening meal, but the staff obliged us with a meal that was magnificent.Proper cooking of traditional food with high quality local ingredients, and the best house red wine I have ever tasted in England in my 67 years! I urge anyone living nearby,or passing-by on the A303 to pay a visit--you will not be disappointed.

Looking for somewhere to stop for lunch approximately 18 months ago,
my partner and I found the Mildmay quite by chance . We were so
impressed that we are now regular overnight guests when we are in the
area.

The staff, and in particular the owners, Sue and Jim, always greet us
so warmly. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is too much trouble. Just
recently our arrival to the Mildmay was delayed but they kept the
restaurant open for us to enjoy yet another fine meal.

The food is fantastic which I believe, where possible, is locally
sourced and compliments must also be made to the chef here. All
freshly cooked and there is no pressure to leave your table after a
certain time unlike some establishments we have visited in the past.

The bedrooms are warm, cosy, well decorated and clean with coffee/tea
facilities plus Freeview tv. Breakfast is ordered the night before and
delivered to your door at whatever time you request. Continental in
style with the addition of freshly baked, toasted bread.

It’s a great place for a stopover whilst travelling the A303. Or if you
are looking for a base to discover Somerset and Wiltshire. We cannot
recommend this place highly enough, not only for the above, but the
staff and local residents are more than happy to advise you on places
to visit (with a bit of history thrown in).

From our experience it is very rare to find somewhere where you are
greeted as if you have just walked into an old friend’s lounge.

By the way. When you do visit you must compliment Sue on her
Guppies!!!!!!!!!!!

We found the Mildmay Arms by chance while travelling back from Devon with our 19 and 7 year old boys. The staff were very welcoming and cheerful (always a good sign) but when our food was brought to the table the evening improved even more. The food is wholesome, very nicely prepared and well presented. We will, in future, be timing our journeys to & from Devon in order that we can return to The Mildmay Arms for dinner whenever possible even though it requires a detour for us. Well done to all the staff at The Mildmay Arms.

stayed overnight at accommodation attending local wedding with family also friends had other room at pub, initial dealings with owner/s very good, friendly and welcoming to us, as they did make an effort to let us in at 8 o'clock after an early travel. our other party found them a bit distant. My wife and I had double room en-suite and teenage boys share double next door, Our room was quite large, decoration reasonable, shower room needed updating, bit grubby. Boys room to roughly same standard.
unfortunately was let down by a couple of things, breakfast was very dull, just toast and pastries quite dry and cold, tea coffee was D I Y in room, did have selection of cereals. breakfast brought to door and left. No option of cooked breakfast, or to eat in restaurant downstairs.
also the corridor outside rooms shared with owners flat smelt strongly of cigarette smoke which was unpleasant,
We paid £55 pounds for en-suite and £45 for double, rates would be better appreciated if a pleasant breakfast was offered, and owners were a little more bothered with their guests. We ended up down the road at the Sparkford inn for breakfast, which was offering a full selection of fare, for £6.50 and £57 B & B, a better atmosphere with owners and staff warm and welcoming.

The Mildmay Arms is a small establishment with a small team; for this reason, we are not able to offer Full English Breakfast and offer Continental Breakfast as an alternative. We do make it clear that the price of £55.00 includes Continental Breakfast on our website. The price is per room, which can sleep three, rather than per person and so, with full occupancy, the price is £18.33 per person including Continental Breakfast.

I personally prepare the Continental Breakfast which consists of a good selection of cereals with a jug of fresh milk, orange juice, butter, jam and marmalade, fresh toast, croissants and pain au chocolat. I ensure that the toast, croissants and pain au chocolat are piping hot and delivered to the door at the requested time, however early that may be. I knock on the door to signal that breakfast has arrived. When the breakfast is actually collected and eaten may result in the hot toast and pastries becoming cold and dry.

Unfortunately, the smoking ban requires people to smoke outside. The window on the landing is always wide open in the summer months hence the smell of smoke in the corridor above that has been mentioned in another review. I appreciate this being brought to my attention and will take steps to remedy this.

Our rooms are cleaned thoroughly every day and personally checked my me.

We pride ourselves, and have the reputation for, ensuring our guests are well looked after and we always go the extra mile to ensure that this is the case. If any guest has an issue and communicates it to me at the time, I address it personally and do everything in my power to resolve it promptly.

As The Mildmay Arms motto says: “A WARM WELCOME AND GREAT HOSPITALITY GUARANTEED”
