We made a last minute decision to stay here for one night on our way from Essex to visit friends in Devon, to break the tedium of the A303 in summer. We booked the day before and were offered the late availability break (afternoon tea, champagne, dinner, b&b), which is truly excellent value. We were impressed when we were asked during booking whether we would like blankets or a duvet on the bed.
Our priority had been to find somewhere good to eat, and the food exceeded even the very high standard we have come to expect from an AA 3 rosette rated establishment such as this. The icing on the cake was that the accommodation was also excellent. The whole experience, starting with a very warm greeting from the lovely Emma, was akin to staying with very good friends in their country house. Only one other couple was staying that night, but the restaurant was almost full. Our fellow dinner guests were friendly, creating a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.
Our room was a good size, had a comfortable bed, was furnished with a designer touch and of course exhibited the character one should expect from a building around 300 years old. It is probably not for those who prefer the predictability and impersonalily of a chain hotel, with standard bathrooms and MDF furniture, who would perhaps be unhappy about the lack of a lift or having to prop open the huge, venerable sash windows with the small wedges provided, but for us, character wins hands down.
The high standard was maintained at breakfast, with, among other things, fresh orange juice and freshly cooked smoked salmon with scrambled eggs straight from the kitchen. The indefatigable Emma not only served our breakfast, but was on hand to bid us farewell on our departure.
