“Lovely farmhouse, unfortunately tainted”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2007

Charming farmhouse and initially warm and welcoming owners, who'll seemingly do everything to help - even arranged lifts with local friend rather than using taxi firms.

Delightful rooms and a lovely breakfast, although major indigestion from the announcement upon departure that an additional nights' fee was needed because we apparently couldn't stay for only one night... always nice to be told after you've booked and arrived... even stranger seeing as we stayed for one night in June too!

After an uncomfortable conversation (with local heavy on hand for back-up!) which resulted in a compromise and an additional payment to placate the owner, we were just pleased to be back on the road again.

All in all a lovely spot, just watch out for the unstable owner and summary additional charges upon departure - get confirmation of your booking dates in writing from the owner before arriving.

If you can't be dealing with unstable owners, the Helyar Arms in the next village is lovely too, although a little more expensive.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2007

We were looking for a place to stay near Yeovil and I chose the Barwick Farm House based on its own website. There were 4 of us travelling: my husband and I, and my parents who were visiting from the US. After an enchanting drive through a sandstone cutting in the small lane leading to the house, we arrived to find an authentically rustic working farmhouse, parts of which date back to the 1600's. We were greeted initially by the curious glances of a horse in the stable beside the barn where we parked!
Angela, the gracious owner, explained that she has wanted to keep the original elements of the house intact which is evidenced through the original, charmingly-creaky wood floors and walls. Our rooms were spacious and cosy, each different with its antique furniture and quilts and blankets. Our two rooms had the shared use down the hallway of a large bathroom, which combined old and new with a claw-footed bathtub alongside a new, modern power shower.
The breakfast was served in an elegant, book-lined breakfast room, and we enjoyed the cereals, juices, coffee/tea, and full cooked breakfast which kept us going for the whole day!
The Barwick Farm House is probably not for everyone - if you are more used to cookie-cutter hotel rooms the rustic charm of the farmhouse may not appeal to you. We loved it, however and felt like at £30/pppn it was a great find. Hopefully we will get to return!

  • Liked — Architecture of house, rustic elegance
  • Disliked — Using a shared bathroom - although we didn't really mind this too much!
