Sunday lunch was very limited for a non-meat eater and the fish cakes were certainly not made on the premises. Although the staff were friendly enough the whole place lacked energy and style. Pity, because it's in a beautiful village with Montacute House right next door.

What terrible customer service from a very rude person on the other end of the telephone. I had a group of people visiting the area and had heard some good comments about the food.... but customer service should start from the first contact, be it by telephone or face to face. As a customer I expect a level of courtesy when I decide to commit my time and money. Obviously this business is doing so well that it can treat potential customers with disdain. I will not be making any enquiries to this establishment or recommending it to family or friends.

Went to Montacute for 3 days to visit the local National Trust Houses in the area, one of which is almost next door (Montacute House) to The Phelips Arms at the end of the village. We stayed with Kevin & Carolyn, who are in our opinion the very best of hosts, they make you feel very welcome, there is a very nice bar area, the rooms are spotless and very comfortable, and what about Kevins cooking, this has to be the very best that we have ever had in a B & B, a full english breakfast is included in the room tariff, and what about the sumptious evening meals that Kevin cooks. I really do not know how one reviewer can give this place a bad review, they must have stayed somewhere else, as this place I can only agree with the other reviews is first class, looking forward to visting again soon.

We arrived and was shown our room, I thought it was a little tired but clean. Not a bad nights sleep as our room (4) was over the bar area but all went quiet by 11 .We went to breakfast and found a very warm welcome from the hosts Kevin and Carolyn who could not do enough to make you feel welcome, our breakfast was one of the best we have had, good quality and certainly enough even for us both, We would return if in that area again.

This was the second time two grumpy Mancunians stayed with Kevin and Carolyn, who really are the best hosts. The rooms are clean, comfortable and warm with all necessary facilities. The bar is friendly with many locals who are happy to chat and pass the time. The bar staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. There is an excellent menu available and the food is well cooked local produce, the portions have to be seen to be believed! The size and variety in the Mixed Grill almost defeated me!! We will be back again in July for more of the same...can't wait.!

I stayed at Carents House B&B nearby and ate at The Phelips Arms for the three nights I was in Montacute. The food was first-rate, the staff fabulous and the prices were pretty unbelievable – just wish they’d open a pub near us!

Although I was on my own, I didn’t feel uncomfortable and I was looked after extremely well. The music was good (mostly 1960’s tracks which, amazingly, stand up really well after nearly 50 years!) but not intrusive or annoying.

The first night I had pork, the second a salad and the last evening I had the duck, which was absolutely superb. The hot meals came with a wonderful selection of 4 or 5 vegetables and the portions were generous and very filling – what with these meals and the enormous breakfast at Carents House, I came home slightly heavier than I left, despite some walking! Oh, but it was so worth it!

We have just got back from a stay at the Phelips Arms and we just cannot understand how anybody can have anything negative to say about this place .
It is in the perfect location in the beautiful village of Montacute,do visit the TV and Toy Museum and the stately home just yards away from this pub .
All the staff made us feel so welcome, the room was spotlessly clean and we had our evening meal here, which was very good value for money,we stayed a friday night and there was a local band,The Tin Box Boys playing which made for a really good night.
The breakfast was excellent and filled us up for the rest of the day,we were not hungry until much later in the day .
A special thank you to the Landlord for the very kind offer to run us to where we were going,we would recommend anybody to stay here, its a fantastic place and full value for money.
