“Great base for exploring the area.”

Lovely cottage with everything you might need. We stayed in July with glorious weather so did lots of walking, fantastic views from Sutton Bank. We also visited York, Rievaulx, Ripon, Fountains Abbey and Masham for a brewery tour. The cottage is just 10 mins walk from The White Horse pub where we had two really good vegetarian meals.

“A thoroughly enjoyable two-week break”
Reviewed 15 August 2017 for a stay in July 2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our two-week break in this delightful cottage for two on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. We would be happy to return.

The cottage is pleasantly cosy, and its garden has a spectacular view across the Holbeck Valley towards the Howardian Hills. Horses graze in the field below, and the area is rife with rabbits, one or two of which visited the garden early every morning.

Brackensyke is well equipped. The bedroom has a large wardrobe, plenty of drawers and a lovely view from its window. However, we did not find the bed particularly comfortable.

The narrow kitchen is rather cramped, with little worktop space for food preparation. But it had all the equipment we needed — including no fewer than three one-litre cafetières (a smaller one would have been more useful).

We were disappointed that no one came in during the middle weekend to clean the cottage and change the bed linen. This is a service that has been provided at every other cottage we have booked for a two-week stay in recent years. (In the event, we found some spare bed linen, changed the bed, and washed and dried the first week’s sheet, pillow cases and duvet cover ourselves.)

Food buying may need careful planning because, apart from a small Co-op five miles away in Helmsley, the nearest supermarkets are in Thirsk (12 miles west — Tesco & Lidl) or Malton (16 miles east — Asda & Morrisons). We were disappointed by the range of stock in Ampleforth’s village shop, but it may now be better because the shop changed hands during our stay. We did not eat out in the evenings, but local people told us that the pubs in Ampleforth and Wass all serve excellent food.

Brackensyke is within easy reach of many historic sites, including National Trust stately homes and English Heritage ruins. York, with its well-known attractions, is just over 20 miles away, and we would recommend a drive across the wilder parts of the National Park to visit Whitby.

Locally, every Thursday afternoon at 2.15pm, one of the Benedictine monks of Ampleforth Abbey gives a free guided tour of the Abbey Church, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and furnished by Robert “Mouseman” Thompson (look out for his signature church mice carved on the choir stalls).

“Great location - needs some work”
Reviewed 13 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

You can't beat the location. Sweet views (which hopefully will be improved with removal of some shrubbery), and close to many attractions of the North Yorkshire moors. Minor problems with written directions and no useful information about setting up wifi, local pubs, groceries, etc., but owner very helpful on the phone and has indicated all this will be corrected. Bedroom very nice, although bed a bit saggy. Living room adequate. Bathroom and kitchen functional but long and narrow and one person at a time. Excellent lighting and strong wifi signal. You really need a car.

Well appointed Cottage, great view from the garden. Good clear directions, the post code takes you straight there. Two great pub/restaurants in the village and a very good tea room.

“Little gem of a cottage with beautiful views.”

Stayed at Brackensyke a few times usually in October but decided to go in April and see it in the Spring, we had snow! Cottage was lovely, always warm never had to use wood burner. It is the perfect cottage to relax in, the garden is lovely and the views are beautiful. There is so much to see and do in the area, great walks starting from the cottage door. We keep thinking we should stay somewhere else for a change but Brackensyke is such a gem we just keep coming back.

“Peaceful.”
Reviewed 31 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We enjoyed staying in this little gem. The weather was kind to us and we had a good workout walking back up the hill after going to the village. The photographs of the views do not do them justice. We would definitely stay there again.
