Shallowdale House
Ranked #2 of 2 Ampleforth B&B and Inns
Reviewed 26 February 2013

We have just returned from our third visit to Shallowdale House having found the exceptionally high standard experienced previously has certainly been maintained. The attention to detail is rarely found elsewhere. Every aspect of our stay left little to be desired and if peace and tranquility is what you are looking for this is the place.

Room Tip: All rooms are of the same high standard.

Anton and Phillip are experienced, attentive and gracious hosts. Our room was spotless clean and extremely well appointed and comfortable. The drive to York is reasonably short and the location is perfect for exploring greater Yorkshire.

Have dinner at least one night of your stay. The food is world class, featuring ultra fresh regional fare, cooked to perfection and presented at the highest level. Breakfast, of course, is wonderful and the view from the dining area is beautiful.

The sitting rooms are comfortable and encourage interaction among the guest. Of course, you can retire to your room or enjoy the reading room situated between the rooms at the top of the stair.

The garden is glorious, providing both broad setting and smaller, intimate areas. The side yard is huge, with some large trees, including a lovely willow, leading the eye to the surrounding countryside.

We have been staying at Shallowdalehouse for a number of years and have always had a wonderful time. It is on the edge of Ampleforth and each of the 3 bedrooms and the public rooms have outstanding views. On arriving in the afternoon delicious home baked goodies with tea are provided. For dinner, reserve in advance, and be prepared to enjoy 4 delicious courses followed by coffee and mints. There is also a small but excellent wine list. The bedrooms are well equipped with thoughtful touches, like robes and fresh milk for tea or coffee making. Breakfast is wonderful with sweet, freshly squeezed oj, locally sourced ingredients for the cooked breakfast and lots more. Phillip and Anton are friendly, helpful hosts and do all they can to ensure you enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: One ensuite room has a smaller bedroom but a larger bathroom with a separate shower and bath. The ot...

We stayed for two nights and wanted to stay forever. There is absolutely nothing that we would change at this perfect B&B. Our hosts were cultured, warm and clearly enjoy having guests in their house. The food was high quality and beautifully cooked and presented. The bedroom was spacious & had 'the view' and the beds were comfy. We can't wait for our next chance to return.

We have stayed with Phillip and Anton here several times and their welcome and friendliness is always wonderful. It is a lovely house tastefully furnished with mature gardens and a great view over the fields and hills. The highlight (not including afternoon tea and freshly baked biscuits) is the evening 4 course meal prepared by Phillip and served with wit, aplomb and style by Anton. Innovative main courses and a great cheese board. We have travelled near and far but this B * B is simply the best.

Room Tip: We always stay in the left hand en suite as you face the house.
