“Fantastic little motel”
Reviewed 14 April 2013

This was an absolutely marvellous find, great views and such fantastic value. It is not well advertised and thus not easy to find, but well worth it when you do. It is not a conventional motel, there are no staff on site, it is described as "serviced accommodation". However, practically speaking it doesn't make a lot of difference. Help is just on the end of a telephone line, and the rooms are serviced daily and since at most motels in New Zealand the staff all pack up and go home at 7pm there is very little difference. There is a choice of 3 apartments from 1 bedroom to 3 bedroom. The smallest (1 bedroom) was just $90 and by far the best value we found on our holiday. It was a nice room with a very small kitchenette and a good sized bathroom, but with a fantastic balcony with a glorious view. We would thoroughly recommend it. The only downside is a lack of eating places nearby. The nearest at Niagara Falls (an intentional joke - nothing like the original Niagara falls) was rather expensive, but anything else is a fair drive away (although not more than 30 minutes).

We stayed at the Anchorage in February 2013 as part of a nine week trip round NZ. The accommodation benefits from a wonderful quiet location with great views. The room was well serviced. Although the décor was rather tired and the queen bed not great, the room was excellent value for money and the relatively minor drawbacks are more than compensated for by the location and price. No shops nearby so need to stock up before arrival.

This is a very spacious and clean apartment. (We had the one that slept 4) with a large lounge, 2 lovely bedrooms and large kitchen/diner. The views from the balcony are amazing. There is also a useful laundry room. An excellent location for touring the Catlins and only a few minutes drive from the pengiuins at Curio Bay!

We spent one night here on a sunny Winter's drive through the Catlins. We booked two adjacent units upstairs for four adults and one child. Highlights were the large space, the balcony with a peaceful view of the Waikawa Harbor, and a fairly well-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher. Heating the place required a degree of competence with working a wood-burning stove and chopping some kindling, which we fortunately had. The major draw-back was the lack of a general store nearby where we could buy something for breakfast; travelers should be forewarned. Fortunately we had a small amount of leftovers from a good meal at the nearby Niagara Falls Cafe, this kept us going until a nice lunch at the Old Post in Gore.

The Anchorage is on a dead-end road leading to a small jetty. It is set above the road up a short drive and has a fabulous view of the bay. We sat on the terrace outside our room with a glass of wine and just soaked up the view. Lots of seabirds, especially oystercatchers.
Our room was very comfortable with full en-suite and cooking facilities. The utensils were a bit random and we did have to borrow a can opener from the room next door!
We only stayed two nights but this would make a good base for a longer stay if touring the Catlins. Don't miss Curio Bay (fossilised trees and penguins), Porpoise Bay (dolphins if lucky) and McLean Falls.
