“Amazing location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 January 2014

The campground is situated at Curio bay. A really stunning location! The sites are very private, because they are seperated by high reeds.
The facilities are poor. We only used the toilets, because we didn't have our on in our van. They were dirty and didn't have lights. The other facilities didn't look very inviting, so we didn't use them.

if you go to the campgrounds website they provide self contained cottages as well. one of them is called annies cottage.because everything was booked out at tiny curio bay we booked that cottage. 170 dollars incl.linen rent as beds are not made up. the whole house doesnt look in the slightest as in the web page. instead you will have a very, very filthy and run down house FULL with dead and alive big flies. the "new shower" was maybe new long time ago. it was just dirty. the bath tub had black streams and the toillet was yellow as it hasnt been cleaned since long long time. the furniture is very old and the beds were disgusting.very old mattresses and teared pillows. i can recommend them to make up the beds so the guests dont see the mess underneath!
the whole house is very filthy and full with owners stuffs. old magazines and old food and potts.
when i tried to ask for a lower rate. 150 instead of 170 the care taker nick got very grumpy and told me that he usually rents it out for over 200! i couldnt believe that people really would pay that money to stay in filthy run down cottage which must have looked very nice many many years ago!!! shame to let a place run down like that!
the only positiv thing about the cottage is the beautiful view where you can see the dolphins jumping into the surf.other than that i would recommend you avoid this place if you have another choice!

Room Tip: avoid the dirty, filthy and run down annies cottage at curio bay which is somehow associated to the c...

This is a pretty basic holiday park but in a stunning location and it cost only $16 for 2 people to park a campervan on a non-powered site. There isnt any internet there but there are toilets and showers as well as laundry facilities.
The best thing about this site is how close it is to the Petrified forest where you can see fossilised trees and also the yellow eyed penguins (worlds rarest) which come ashore at dusk at the same location. Some people were getting a bit too close to the penguins as there isn’t anything stopping them but you can still get closer and better views than at Nugget Point, further up the coast in the Catlins.

Completely self contained motorhome so had no need to check out the facilities. Helpful camp manager who gave us time to sort out our preferred camping spot. Enjoyed watching the Hectors dolphins playing in the surf, pity the penguins were less in evidence but did see three youngsters.

Set in a stunning location with good private sites. Shop on site, which is helpful as there is little in town. Facilities terrible (not brave enough to face the showers), but great for a night with easy access to both Porpoise Bay and Curio Bay.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2013

We camped here for a night and absolutely loved the area. We had a campsite on a cliff, with the sea at our doorstep - stunning. You could see Hector's Dolphins in Porpoise Bay, we caught the Yellow Eyed Penguins at dusk, we went surfing with the local surf instructor - all fantastic experiences. However, be aware that the facilities are pretty poor. The toilets and showers are ancient, the "kitchen" is essentially a couple of hot plates and a kettle in a hut. We knew all of this from reading reviews before so just prepared accordingly - we heated water for tea, coffee and our dehydrated meal, we managed to shower, etc. Another downside is perhaps the reservation system for tent sites. We had set up our tent in what appeared to be one "site" according to the map provided, however another tent was set up behind us. It was a busy weekend (Easter) so I assume this isn't usually the norm.

All of the above said, however, the camping was the cheapest we had all trip, so perhaps the facilities are proportional to this? Mostly though, the location is so good I'm sure the campground can get away without maintaining facilities. It would be fantastic if they paid attention to these reviews, though, and renovated kitchen and shower facilities. They would be spectacular then!
