This cheap small camp site is about as basic as a camp site can be without being a DOC site yet it has much to say for itself and should be on most people's visiting list. Imagine a camp site on a headland overlooking a large sandy beached bay with clear blue waters, the occasional pod of Hectors dolphins gently swimming around the bay, numerous yellow eyed penguins at certain times, a place to surf if the wind is right and extreme quiet – this is Cureo Bay. The camp site consists of a number of powered pitches each surrounded by high flax to protect them from the wind and some camping spots and unpowered sites. Washing facilities (showers $2) and toilets are basic in extremis, the camp kitchen is very very basic, all water needs boiling, the office (shop) has a few goods (good ice cream) but then the site does not pretend to be anything else. Check-in was easy and friendly and advice given as to the best time and spot to see both the petrified forest and also the penguins (low tide time and a bit before dusk respectively). On a sunny day this place is paradise, on a cold rainy day it could be the opposite. Self contained vans make being here easy, those dependent on camp site facilities would find it harder. One could imagine that this site would fill up very quickly in high season and that booking ahead would be advisable.
