We did a trip up north and decided to stop at the Kawiti caves. What an awesome gem of a place. I took my kids of 2 and 5 and they loved it.The walk was easy and we saw amazing worms up close. Angela our guide was brilliant and made us feel right at home! she knew everything about these worms and it was a pleasure to listen to her stories. Thanks Angela

This was highly recommended by a friend & so worth it.
We were lucky enough to go in the quiet season so our family of four got a tour to ourselves.
Plenty of glow worms to be seen with relatively easy access via boardwalk into the cave.
If you had a disability you could easily walk back to the start via the boardwalk, but otherwise you end up walking up and around through native bush which is a great opportunity.
The history you learn, & the education about glow worms was fab.
Interestingly the worms were indicating it was going to rain (went on a sunny day) & within 24 hours a massive storm started!
Definitely worth a visit :)

We visited here last week on a very cold winters day. Thanks to Pai (?) for a great experience, it was nice to have a descendant show us around the caves. She was very good guide, explaining many details to us all. The glow worms were amazing. And there were so many. It is nice to see caves that still untouched looking and in pristine condition still. Congratulations to the staff who obviously keep it this way. There is a very well maintained board walk that goes through the caves and the guide gives you torches to use throughout the caves. There are stages the torches are tuned off and you are left in complete darkness apart from the glow worms, very exciting. Very informative guide gave info on glow worms, history of caves and other details. When the tour is finished you are left to take a walk up over the caves and down a trail to the entrance area. Well worth the visit, I would recommend to anyone travelling in the area.

This was one of my favourite activities on my trip up north. It was not a great day - but it is dry in the caves. We were the only two on the tour. It was amazing to be shown around by a 13th generation descendant from the lady who found and lived in the caves. He was able to answer all of my questions. The glow worms were close and amazing. The caves were also very impressive. I felt like it was a privilege to go through the caves. You have to stop!
