“Outstanding: Major city standard fine dining at the beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

When friends suggested we have dinner at the pub after cycling the Paeroa to Waihi rail trail, I expected a very good meal of, say, steak burger and chips. Instead, I had the best restaurant meal I can remember in the past decade! The restaurant has been thoroughly and delightfully refurbished and now managed by the Auckland-based 'Hip Group.' I knew nothing about this group before the meal; I've studied up on it since. Briefly, its principals aim to bring 'world class' fining dining to Auckland and, now, Waihi Beach (see http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=10859203). Four of us had absolutely outstanding mains. Two of us had the lamb dish, one the pan fried snapper, and the other the Zucchini salad. For desert, I had the walnut cake with washed rind cheese, rewarewa honey and bee pollen. Delicious! I can't really do justice the food; for a comprehensive review see Viva, 5 February 2014 (see http://www.nzherald.co.nz/viva-magazine/news/article.cfm?c_id=533&objectid=11196518). The wine list was short, very good, and not outrageously priced; we had the Kumeu Village Chardonnay. This may be Kumeu River's most modest and cheapest Chardonnay, but it is still very good and went well with our meals. Tip: A visit to Waihi Beach is worthwhile, see the Viva review (also 5/Feb14) of the area. In addition, the table servers were very friendly, well informed about the food and wine, and attentive to customers' needs. The outdoor seating was comfortable and pleasant; the restaurant even provided wraps for those who were a bit cold.

“Love the food staff and atmopshere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

This place is the perfect balance of stunning food and relaxed beach atmosphere, with very reasonable prices. The staff are attentive without being too in your face, the food is divine (even the vegetarian main is out of this world). They also have the cutest sorbet/gelato ice cream shop next door and they let you have an ice cream (in a cone) in the restaurant for dessert - which is fantastic. The salted caramel ice cream is absolutely beautiful.

“City Sophistication in Waihi Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

Greg At Waihi Beach Lodge recommended we might like to try something a little different, it is, quiet city sophistication on the Coromandel, don’t take a man who wants meat & two veg here they will be disappointed but for people who want real flavour, a mix of the possibly unusual and an willingness to try; they will be well impressed as we were. Great staff who explain fully the ingredients, are happy to make suggestions and check you are enjoying what you ordered. Then when it comes to sweet/pudding as well as the sweet menu you can choose from their range of superb homemade ice-cream, really piggish and to think I would eat a waffle cone of espresso & double chocolate ice-cream in a restaurant at 9.00pm is possible bizarre but an incredible taste experience as was the rest of the meal, well worth a try, you are likely to return!

“Great spot for people watching!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2014

Very impressed with this new restaurant at Waihi Beach. We were there over the busy Auckland Anniversary weekend and the restaurant was full-to-bursting for the evening meal. I was impressed by the number of waiting staff (I counted at least 10) and the staff in the kitchen seemed to be working well and efficiently. Our meals came quickly and the waiting staff attentive. We didn't sit outside as it seemed to be cooling down, but then I noticed that when the sun set the staff were providing light blankets for those sitting outdoors.

“great food when we finally got it”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

Arrived at 7pm waitress was wonderful drinks and food order taken, then we waited and waited, no one came to check or explain why an hour later we finally got our dinner. If it had been the difficult dish msybe but rare stesk and salad? Pity as it spoiled the experience a little so get a small starter to keep you going.
