“Spectacular Hideaway in the Pyrenees”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

One can imagine riding a horse up the steep valley 100 years ago and turning a corner to see this beautiful Chateau overlooking the cascading river below. The same experience awaits you as you drive your car up the twisting roadway to Chateau De Riell. On arrival a very gracious team attended to our every need. Indeed it was impressive, as my wife and I rode up two floors, the alacrity with which the hostess ascended the staircase to meet us outside of our room. The room overlooking the valley and pool was decadent and comfortable. The rooftop pool (which we had to ourselves!) provided a surreal experience on top of French Chateau looking out over the eastern Pyrenees. Dinner was again a magnificent experience with tasty alternatives offered up for my vegetarian palate and an excellent wine selection to accompany the meal. The grounds offer hours of beautiful scenery to wander through, including waterfalls, canyons, tennis courts, playgrounds for children, and several wading areas in the river. Service at the bar, restaurant and poolside was also spectacular with suggestions and attention that were spot on. Terrific Stay!

Room Tip: The Castle Rooms were terrific, but I have no experience with the other choices.

This 3-day stay was the highlight of our 10 days trip, passing from the coast to mountains in the Pyrenees Orientales. The small nearby village is perfect, the chateau's location is perfect, the roof-top pool was perfect for our 1.5 year off to cool off in (it was 30-38 degrees in August), in addition to the "normal" pool at ground level. Our large corner room was amazing (can't recall the name, but it was at the 1st floor and has the restroom shower & bath, all in a separate "corner turret", overlooking the forest. The breakfasts are excellent (they do take a while to arrive but its worth the wait). Very friendly staff, and concierge very knowledgable about matching the region with our own interests for the day. It's a great base to explore the river walks and mountains and attractions of this diverse area. A unique place to stay. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our large corner room was amazing (can't recall the name, but it was at the 1st floor and has th...

We booked this hotel for 3 days to celebrate a special occasion. The location of this property is magnificent, however, we were placed in a room (in the castle as requested) facing the entrance driveway and could not enjoy the view anywhere else because of bad weather. The room was cavernous, relatively small and over-furnished. On arrival, we booked our dinner at the restaurant and let them know of our celebration. They offered to put flowers on our table and bring in a desert with a candle. To our surprise, and under poring rain, we found out that the restaurant is in a separate building and that we have to walk outside to get there. At this point we went back to the room to bring in outdoor clothes. The meal was nice, but there were neither flowers no candles. When I inquired, I was told that the restaurant did not receive any communication from reception about our special celebration.
After reading other comments in this site, we decided not to have the expensive breakfast on location, but go to the nearby village and have a more reasonable breakfast on a simple but quaint covered terrace. I would recommend others do the same. For dinner, we tried (and enjoyed) the restaurant at the nearby hotel which houses the spa for this hotel. There we had a very good meal at a more reasonable price. In sum, we enjoyed the experience, but there is room for improvement.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with mountain view in a higher floor.

Once again, found this thanks to Travelzoo. Never been on our mind to visit this area of France. Sadly, we were only here for three nights. We stayed in one of the adjoining cottages(Cedre), which was lovely and cosy, and bizarrely Gaudi-inspired. We ate in the restaurant for the first night, and yes, at 60 Euros a head, a tad steep, but excellent food in a beautiful room. The breakfast was great, luckily included in our package, what a glorious view. Also included was a 2 hour session in the Thermes(Grand Hotel), not my cup of tea, but the best ever see, or so I was informed by my better half. The drive from Perpignan was wonderful, beautiful windy roads through stunning scenery, albeit somewhat narrow in places, but hey, how dya put an A road up mountains. Places to eat, Grand Hotel was good, a small Bistro up the Hill in Molitg village, excellent and Ferme Auberge on the Mousset road. Duck and Veal at it's best. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, my French being somewhat ancient and lacking. had a quick look at a room before we left, stunning. We will be back

We spent two Nights at Château Riell at the end of August and would have loved to stay for longer, go for hikes in this wonderful area. Our room was lovely, spacious and obviously just redone, great bathroom, Georgeous views. Very friendly and warm welcome. The restaurant in the Château was very good, the Service professional and very nice. I just loved the little terrace on Top of the chateau with its great views and the little pool. My husband had a Massage in the SPA, he enjoyed it very much, if for the Long Walk down to the SPA Center at the Grand Hotel.

Rather bizarre and very pretentious. The rooms are odd and the experience does not reflect the price. The pool is nice, breakfast at €25 was hugely over priced an the staff were not greatly welcoming. The grand hotel is a better bet.

This chateau is located in a small hot springs area in the Pyrenees and certainly off the beaten tourist track. We were there for two nights in a large room that was comfortable. The chateau is historic so the windows are such that not a lot of light comes in but we liked the room and slept well. The bathroom is fine with two sinks, a toilet cabinet and shower/tub combination. Watch that water does not come out beyond the glass of the tub when you take a shower or the floor will be very wet.

The staff was most congenial and recommended places to visit. Breakfast was served in a separate little cottage with a lot of charm. It was plentiful including breads, yoghurt, cheeses, juices, fruit, coffee, etc.

The restaurant is known for its cuisine and certainly excellent. They were most accommodating of our requests as well. They fixed me the most beautiful spring salad I have ever seen. All fresh, well prepared, luxury.

There is a heated pool which I swam in and found the temperature to be fine. The grounds are a bit vertical but lovely. They have a garage park that was accessible by elevator.

One caution - we depended on the GPS of the Hertz car for directions and it routed us on a 1 1/2 lane road through the back side of the mountains. It was a scary drive on I think D 84. The concierge said they have had this problem so I suggest the hotel contact Hertz and other companies or the GPS companies. The drive was not pleasant as we had to dodge oncoming cars.

However the area is beautiful and different from other areas of France. It is certainly worth a journey.

Room Tip: Our room was large and comfortable. It was on the 2nd (3rd floor
