“Good and Bad”

Stayed for one night with my wife on a Travel Zoo deal. Very attractive hotel and a lovely room, if a little small, but fine for one night. The disappointment with the room was the small standard size double bed. I thought that most hotels had larger double beds for comfort. We did not sleep very well.
The second disappointment was the second class citizen Travel Zoo menu. A choice of just two starters, one veggie, 2 main courses, nothing veggie although they did offer something from the main menu and two sweets. The main menu was large and had a good choice of food but that was £15.00 extra per person for travel zoo guests. Why do hotels offer an attractive deal then spoil it with a limited choice for dinner. Having said that, we were lucky to find meals that we enjoyed and the food that we had was extremely good and the service was excellent. Breakfast was also very good with a very good selection.
Great location near Rye with the beach across the road.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with a king size bed.

This was our second stay at the Gallivant and. once again, we weren't disappointed.
Food was simple, fresh and well presented. Salt marsh lamb was exceptional!!
Our room was warm and welcoming on a very stormy November day.
What more can you want!

From arriving to this lovely little hotel, to leaving, the staff were absolutely amazing, friendly and helpful!! The room was clean and cozy, and the beach was literally across the road!
The food! Oh my!! Fresh sea food, the chef even came out to greet us personally. We loved our time here!! Thank you to all the staff who made our stay special :)

My boyfriend and I recently stayed for my birthday and loved our time in the Gallivant. The trip was a surprise for my birthday so I was in awe of all the carefully selected details from the moment we walked in. The wonderfully nautical charm of the whole place worked so well with how luxurious it also felt. Everything was beautifully finished and I felt at home straight away.

We were lucky to be staying on a weekend with such beautiful weather! It was the first weekend in October when it felt like it was almost still summer so we were spoilt with long beach walks right until it got dark. Being only across a calm road to the beach was wonderful - we could visit anytime! Camber Sands is such a great beach too - beautifully clean and golden rolling sand.

Knowing what matters to me my boyfriend had also selected this beautiful hotel for their restaurant. All the food is locally sourced with great care so that the finished dishes are not only exceptionally high quality but also support the local community. I loved that! We started with the cheese souffle and the devilled crab - both were exactly what they were meant to be, light delicate and delicious. We then enjoyed the steak and the sole. Again both dishes were wonderful - we really couldn't fault the beautiful flavours and care that had clearly gone into preparing each dish. We even found room for a dessert and my jelly made me rethink what a jelly can be! The wine we drank was from a micro estate in New Zealand (a nod to the 'local' and ethical traditions of the restaurant) and was easily one of the best I have drunk - so much so we now check menus with the hope that we might see it somewhere else!

Breakfast was no less impressive than the evening and was a wonderful welcome to a warm and sunny day. Each dish was prepared just for us and again it was clear that care and enthusiasm had gone into preparing our food.

We can't wait to visit again and are already planning a time when we can come back. Thank you for such a brilliant stay - it was a perfect birthday surprise!

What a wonderfully seaside themed hotel right by the beach with great food & lovely appointed bedrooms. Definately worth a visit along with its close proximity to Rye for some shopping & other good pubs & restaurants

Room Tip: Go for the deck rooms.....

Made use of Travelzoo voucher for overnight stay, and hoped for a pleasant time. We arrived late Sunday afternoon, with Sunday lunch still being served. Michael the Manager was extremely welcoming, and after unpacking and heading for bar for drink, reminded us that afternoon tea and cake were available. What a treat ........ A relaxing hour spent we headed back to our room for rest before dinner. Our room was extremely well presented with very large comfy bed, thick bath robes, chunky wooden furniture using reclaimed wood, books to read, tea & coffee making faciliities and homemade cookies. So much attentiion to detail.... we were looking forward to our evening meal.... and that didn't disappoint either. Excellent breakfast next morning and somewhere we will definitely return to again.... with the sandy beach just over the dunes..... what more could you ask for?

Driving towards Camber with the sea on your right, you suddenly come upon the sign for The Gallivant Hotel ON YOUR LEFT! Oh dear. And despite the protestations of the owner, this is a MOTEL, not an hotel. And the motel is situated on the bend of a fairly busy road (again, in contrast to what the owner says in response to other criticisms on this site.)
Sure... he cannot do anything about the location, but he shouldn't litter his website with photographs of the beach. You're never going to see the beach from the motel. Even if you stood on the roof you wouldn't see the beach! It's across the aforementioned busy road, through another car park and on the other side of a rather steep sand dune.
And while I'm talking about the owner... who is he? He's rarely seen, even by the staff (as they quietly admitted to me.) There is a manager who rolls up from time to time, but he exhibits not one iota of managerial 'presence'.
We had one of the larger rooms and both the bed and the sofa were comfortable. Thereby ends the positives. The wifi signal was completely useless. The bathroom had exposed plumbing. The whole place paid tribute to it's motel origins. And as my wife said... the little touches that perhaps only a woman would notice, were sadly lacking. The owner and the manager (both male) need to get a woman in quick to give this place a makeover.
They're charging quite steep prices and I'd be interested in knowing how many people make a return visit. The website is, I would say, misleading, and I certainly would not return. The restaurant is actually very good and I'll make that the subject of a separate review. In the meantime. thank you for reading this review (and please read plenty of the others - I am not alone in expressing these views!)

Room Tip: I don't think there is one!
