“Hotel Viura - a true gem”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

We spent one night (unfortunately...) at Hotel Viura. Had we only known....we would have booked for more nights. What a nice gem, great design, friendly staff, great wine and fantastic atmosphere. We took the hotel bike and went for a short ride, enjoyed the complementary wine tasting and the great room.
We are sure to come back and highly recommend.

Very modern hotel, quite a contrast to the village it's situated in. But somehow it also blends in extremely well. We spent 2 nights here in June 2014 & loved our stay here. Spacious room, excellent breakfast, great dinners & a super helpful staff. Great artworks so that wherever your eye falls, there is something to admire. The location is superb with an abundance of good wineries within 10-20 kms. We will definitely return to this amazing hotel.

My husband and I stayed here for three days the last week of May. We absolutely loved everything. The contrast between the modern hotel and the old town worked. Our room was spacious with a view of the town, the bed was very comfortable and it had a great rain shower. We ate one dinner in the restaurant-- it had a limited menu but we thought the food was very good. A substantial breakfast was included in the room rate. There is a wine shop next to the hotel and the day we arrived the neighbors were hanging around trying wines and asked us to join them. We didn't speak Spanish very well and they didn't speak English too well but we had a great time. What I haven't seen mentioned in other reviews is that if you follow the dirt road behind the hotel for just a short distance, it leads to the most beautiful vineyards and mountain views. We walked and walked and took tons of pictures. The hotel has bikes and we realized too late that they were for riding along the roads in the vineyards. The front desk was very helpful and made great of places to visit. We hadn't made any reservations to visit wineries and they were able to get us into a couple too. They also gave us a great dinner recommendation in a neighboring town. All in all a memorable visit.

Wow! Even when you've seen the pictures on their website, the hotel is an amazing sight. Not quite what you'd expect to come across in the middle a small ancient town, but it integrates surprisingly well. The interior shows the same imagination and attention to detail. The public areas exude calm, rooms are very comfortable and well-equipped. The hotel's restaurant is also excellent. The menu on their website is the reason I chose this hotel - and we weren't disappointed (how about black pudding ravioli with apple cream and vermouth sauce as a starter? - delicious!). The wine list offers plenty of choice from the region's wonderful wines - we chose the option of allowing the sommelier to choose an appropriate wine for each course (rather than trying to find one bottle which would go with everything) - an amazingly affordable option. If I had to complain about anything... the wifi is slow and a bit erratic - but maybe that's deliberate to try and force guests to relax. The surrounding area is wonderful - beautiful countryside, charming old towns, and of course lots of wineries (including a couple within walking distance). Can't wait for the opportunity to go back!

This review is essentially my thank-you to the hotel for a marvellous stay. The design is stunning, and a real contrast to the surrounding village, yet it works. In fact, it probably works so well because of the contrast. The rooms were large, beds comfy, wi-fi free, shower huge and powerful, and on and on. We actually had two rooms at the end of a corridor, and while not exactly adjoining, there was an extra door in the corridor that effectively gave us our own two-room suite-- clever.

We ate at the hotel restaurant twice for dinner and had very nice meals both times. The maitre'd and kitchen went out of their way to make something off-menu for two very picky children so that the adults could actually enjoy the meal. Breakfast was a standard European breakfast, but also had hot dishes off the menu, all included.

Finally, the staff could not have done more to make us feel welcome, answer our questions, and generally be friendly and welcome. Next time without children!

First the good things; all the staff are delightful - helpful, charming and friendly. The wine is superb - but with 40 plus Bodegas on the doorstep one would expect it to be. The rooms are generously sized and beautifully designed. Lovely bathroom products and an enormous and wonderfully comfortable bed. But.....

The designer touches are just a little too frequent and too precious.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to find without a satnav and poorly signposted. The website is no help. Clear directions need to be added.

One expects this hotel to be up a mountain. Instead this gorgeous building has been built at the bottom of a hole in the middle of the village. The only way you could see it as it appears on the website would be by standing on the roof of a house in the village - on the other side of the municipal swimming pool which (when we visited) hadn't been cleaned since the previous summer and was green with algae and filled with dead vegetation and maybe other kinds of debris Eeuch.

From the roof terrace one gazes onto a villager's balcony - tough if you're a local.

Was this built to give wine buyers somewhere to stay while ordering Rioja in bulk? If so, the bathrobes need to be bigger / they won't go round a frame made portly by good living.

The food was a disappointment. The lamb delicious but the guinea fowl tasteless. The stand out was the bread and the oil.

What a waste of a great building - the owners should pick the location better next time they build something as glorious as this.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. Stunning architecture set in a beautiful traditional town. From the moment we arrived to when we left the service was fantastic. Dinner in the restaurant was creative & imaginative & utterly delicious......the "clown" dessert was so much fun we still smile & laugh out loud when we think of it. Get the maître d to choose your wines for each.course & you're in for a real treat. We visited Marques de Riscal while we were there & were bitterly disappointed with the whole experience....unfriendly & unprofessional.......don't bother. I would recommend Hotel Viura over Marques de Riscal any day. Rooms in Viura are modern, minimalist but still luxurious. A fantastic hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the church. We had 203 & it was gorgeous
