“Wonderful taste of Cornwall”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

My family of 5 (all adults) stayed here two nights over New Year's and couldn't have had a nicer experience! We arrived rather late at night due to getting a bit lost and stuck in bad weather on the drive from London, but Rosie was so understanding and even greeted us with a hug and a "Happy New Year!" She and John were both lovely hosts throughout our visit and we really enjoyed talking with them. The location is wonderful and makes you feel like you've been transported back to an old movie in the English countryside - we spent all of New Year's Day morning walking around the grounds and visiting the horses and the beautiful old church on site. Breakfast was excellent, we loved the family suite (and excellent value for two bedrooms and a large private sitting room), and especially appreciated the tip from John upon check-out about taking the train to St. Ives instead of driving - we followed his advice and had a great afternoon there! Heartily recommend and hope to visit again next time we're in Cornwall!

If you want somewhere quiet and peaceful, then this is the place to stay, we spent bank holiday weekend here and loved it, felt relaxed and chilled all weekend. We was just a bit gutted we didn't try the horse riding or horse and cart while we was there, next time is a def though. We met a lovely German family staying there as well and swapped details and addresses and we hope to keep in touch with them. John the owner also does a beautiful full of taste Full English breakfast to start your day off.

Room Tip: all rooms are very spacious.

This B&B is definitely an excellent place to stay. We (2 adults and 2 children) had two double rooms (because the family room was already booked) for the price of one family room . That means we also had two bathrooms which was great. Both rooms were spacious, clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. One room (I think it was the Bishop's Room) actually consisted of two rooms: a bedroom and a private sitting room. Plus bathroom, so what else so you need? We enjoyed our sunny and peaceful time at the Old Vicarage. John and Rosie were very friendly and helfpful. Our daughter had the opportunity to ride a horse for 2 hours which she enjoyed very much. Thanks for everything.

Just got back from a second stay with John and Rosie at the old vicarage and yet again it was beyond first class ! Our room - we stayed in the gemini room but its more like a suite - was spotless as is the whole place- the breakfasts which include fresh fruit salad , cereals , full English , toast n tea n coffee are always delicious and set you up for the day - John and Rosie are great hosts and the horses are truly a horse lovers paradise, with Jack and Daisy being my nine year olds favorites. Nothing is too much trouble and we'll be back next year- thanks again - Diane, David and Millie x

Rosie, John and team, really go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. The B&B is calm, clean, comfortable, spacious and breakfast is as much as you can eat. The riding school caters for all riding levels, caring for beginners, disabilities and advanced riders with equal attention. Their Morgan horses are wonderfully responsive, well trained and cared for. I have been riding for years but am always ready to learn more, with lovely people and horses that are happy and alert, is the only way I want to. The scenery is absolutely stunning. Will definitely be returning!

We stayed for 4 nights after Christmas, visiting friends and family in Cornwall. John and Rosie were very friendly and accommodating, without being intrusive and I had several chats with them about their other business, which involves teaching Western style horse riding and therapy for disabled people. Rosie was kind enough to break off from mucking out, to show us her beloved horses in the paddocks.
Our room was very large, two rooms in one probably, with the en suite tucked around the corner from the main bedroom. Although open in aspect it was large enough to provide privacy and had the added bonus of a shower, bath and a bidet. The mattress on the bed had been sanitized recently with a certificate to prove it!
Breakfast time was very flexible, up to 9 O'clock and a menu sheet was provided daily. In addition to fresh fruit salad , cereals and toast, there was a choice of cooked foods and all was served promptly , including a large pot of tea for me.
The location of the Old Vicarage was excellent for site seeing and in particular our favourite village of Perranuthnoe. We really enjoyed our stay in peaceful, beautiful surroundings and I hope to go back, if not to stay but enjoy some western style riding.

My partner and I arrived at the Old Vicarage on Monday 16th July 2012 at about 7pm after a 7 hour drive from London. We had booked for a week. I rang the doorbell and because I didn’t hear it ring inside I rang it again. John answered the door and said that if he’d been standing right behind the door he would have answered it immediately. It sounded quite rude but I thought I just didn’t understand his sense of humour so shrugged it off. He showed us to the ground floor family suite and we unpacked. There was a strong smell of mildew and there was some actually growing on one wall. We discussed whether it was bearable but then my partner started wheezing from it so we called John and told him we couldn’t stay in the room. He denied there being a problem until we actually showed him the mildew on the wall. We asked if he had another room and he said no. We asked him if he could recommend anywhere else and he said no. We told him that we would stay in the room for a little while to phone around try and find somewhere else and he agreed. After a few minutes he came back and said that he did have another room upstairs but it was booked for another couple who would be arriving in 20 mins so if we could pack our stuff up and still leave him time to prepare the ground floor suite for them we could have the other room. He showed it to us and it looked fine. We packed very hurriedly and moved up to the other room. Only then I realized that the toilet/bathroom had no walls to it! (Yes, I was very unobservant – I should have noticed it when he showed us the room – but who would have thought?! There was just a half wall next to the toilet, so anybody using it would share their sounds and smells with whoever else was in the room. Presumably there is a demand for this but it didn’t suit us. It is also not stated on the site so if you do book after reading this review, be aware of that.) I went down and told John that the toilet arrangement didn’t suit us. He said rudely that we would just have to leave then. I told him we still needed to find somewhere else and he told us to move down into the dining room as quickly as we could because the other guests would be arriving any minute – which we did. A few minutes later he came into the dining room and said that he would have to ask us leave now! To add insult to injury, he took £10 from our deposit – calling it an online booking fee – even though we had booked over the phone. So we were finally thrown out of the Old Vicarage at about 8.00 pm, with no apology, £10 lighter and still with nowhere to stay. So ended our brief but memorable visit to John at the Old Vicarage.
