“An impressive youth hostel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

It seems strange to say you are staying in a "youth hostel mansion" but that's what it is. It is such an impressive house and a lovely place to stay. The position of the hostel is on the outskirts of Penzance so is a fair walk from the centre. We took a local bus for most of the way and walked the remaining bit.
My friend and I were staying for one night only and booked a twin bedded room but ended up with an enormous six bedded (three sets of bunks) room to ourselves as that particular night the hostel wasn't full. It was a luxury to have so much space. We took evening meal in the dining room/bar and found it of a good standard, as was the breakfast that we had the following morning.
The staff were helpful and enthusiastic and I would have no hesitation recommending this youth hostel.

Firstly, if you are driving here, please DO NOT rely on directions from Google maps - read the email from the hostel carefully! (We didn't and ended up wandering around in the dark. Totally our own fault).

Secondly, the best part about this place is the staff - both checking in and checking out was a delight, as the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and genuinely very welcoming. Cannot commend them enough.

From what we saw it looked like a well-renovated and resourced hostel, although we arrived late and left early, and only stayed one night, so didn't get much of a chance to look around. There was a good mix of families and young people on holidays making use of the facilities, and lots of accessible parking.

I'll probably stay here again if I'm in the Penzance region in future.

It's worth the drive to either St Ives' Porthmeor Beach cafe or The Beach restaurant in Sennen for excellent (Australian-standard!) coffee, and great food.

Stayed at a quiet time in Jan but made to feel very welcome, ate some nice food, drank some nice local beer and relaxed. Thanks to the team for a great stay in this refurbished YHA which has a lovely modern feel. Recommended.

Impressive entrance, staircases and stone floors on the lower level. Excellent communal facilities. We had an enjoyable evening meal as well as the splendid breakfast in the restaurant. Staff were all friendly and efficient. Bunks were the most modern I have experienced in a hostel. Toilets and showers modern. High standards of housekeeping.

Stayed there 28 December 2012 - 1 Jan 2013.
Be careful if you rely on the sat nav - the postcode is right but the road is not for cars.
There is another road that takes your car straight to reception - this is the one that heads out of town to Newlyn and / or Mousehole, use this one.
Adequate car parking - good feature.
The YHA does not have a drying room and neither an iron - which is odd...
Rooms are clean, well taken care of and the self catering kitchen is adequate. You may find it inadequate if everyone decides to go self-catering, which is rare potentially!
Staff are friendly - the manager recommended we run to St. Ives for new year's eve - thanks a ton !
Would I go back - 100%
Would I recommend - without a doubt.
Good value for money - there is TESCO and Morrisons within a steady walk and the town is a 15 minute walk (slow pace) -
Keep up the good work - shall return in summer !

Room Tip: All rooms are good - 12 and 13 may be the best !

My partner and I had a wonderful stay! We turned up unexpected and the lovely lady on reception was very friendly and helpful, we even got given an alarm clock with fresh batteries! The room was clean and comfortable, it felt very welcoming. Dinner and wine was lovely and in the end we were happy we got stuck there!

I'm amazed at reading some of the reviews on here that I stayed at the same place. I checked in a couple of weeks in advance for a single night with some friends, which cost me £100 for a 5 bed room. I thought this was slightly steep at the time, but reading some of the reviews- I thought it must have been a great location.

The room had terrible damp problems (there was an old de-humidifier that was constantly running) and black mould on the windows. The room smelt strongly of damp, the wallpaper was peeling and the window wouldn't open more than 2 inches to let the smell out. I could forgive these for a cheap room (£30 a night) but for the price I paid I would have expected at least the same level of quality as a decent B&B.

I was torn writing this as the staff couldn't have been more helpful, and the rest of the hostel looked nice- but in my experience the room let the whole experience down.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the downstairs room
