My wife and I travelled up to Singleton from Portsmouth for a cheeky Saturday pub lunch in the country, after hearing some good things about the place from some work colleagues, a good reputation travels far it turns out.
The place was easy to find and well sign-posted, with plenty of parking space. We were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome at the bar, and talked through the menu and specials enthusiatically, with good and helpful advice.
As the weather was glorious we couldn't turn down the chance to sit outside, in the large, well maintained garden, which had ample (good quality) seating.
We were relatively early for the lunchtime rush, so there was plenty of choice, but by the time we left most of the outdoor seating was taken so get there early, it's clearly popular in the sunshine!
We both ordered the pork belly off the main menu, and this was both delicious and generous. The chilli chutney that came with it was subtle, yet really set off the dish and made it incredibly flavoursome.
We actually bumped into a colleague and his wife in the garden by coincidence, and sat with them, they'd ordered a couple of specials and these were equally well priced, and generous. The seafood platter they had looked particuarly delicious, and I don't even like seafood!
We didn't spend much time inside, but the interior looked nice and inviting, can imagine being a real cosy place to be with the fires going on a cold day!
A highlight of the place for me was the garden, it even had a couple of pheasants wondering the lawn. The pub is also very welcoming of dogs, and the little dog treats available at the bar, a nice touch.
It's a bit of a trek for us, but we will definitely be returning, and will make sure we bring our dog next time, as there's plenty of dog walking opportunites near by.
Well worth the journey.
