When I stayed in the hostel the main body of the guests were working on local kiwi farms and other short term work. What this meant was that there were quite a lot of people living there, as opposed to passing through. The kitchen was overwhelmed with their food, and there were rather stern notices posted everywhere which were clearly pointed towards long term residents. There were some extremely smelly shoes out in the corridors (mind you, better there than in the dorms!) The kitchen was just about clean, but again, seemed overwhelmed by the amount of people using it. The same would apply to the bathrooms.
My dorm experience was quite different on both nights I stayed. The first night, a large extremely messy group of girls had filled the dorm with their things and noise. When they left, the room was in quite a state. This was very well cleaned up and the second night, the dorm was nice and quiet with a just a couple of other people.
A very positive aspect of this hostel is the clean comfortable TV lounge where guests gathered and cheerfully watched films together. Despite there being a fair number of longer term residents there, I never felt left out of this.
The hostel is convenient for the beach, but quite a walk into the centre of the town.More
