“A wonderful resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

After traveling for 3 weeks in Malaysia and Borneo we have truly found a little paradise here. The villas are beautifully furnished and hidden away in the lush vegetation. Everything is quiet and very elegant. Snorkeling in the warm and totally clear sea is easily available. The long white sand beach invites you to swim or paddle. The staff is very friendly and cheerful and makes you welcome. The food is lovely too, served in an airy dining room. All of this has it's price of course. But we would choose Bunga Raya again and never go to another place in the region.

we stayed here for a few nights and this was truely world class. we felt a world away with the crystal clear water and white white sand. I wish we could have stayed longer! The zip line and jungle walkway were amazing. My kids loved it. We paddle boarded along the pristine water and swam in the ocean.

The staff were so helpful and were very accommodating with our dietry requirements.

no complaints here. we had a great time, just wish we had more time there.

Stayed there in October 2013 for 4 days. Should have stayed for 40 :-)

If you are wondering in which resort to stay: Gayana Eco or this one.... then choose this one since the only advantage Gayana has is better snorkeling and water access bungalows. But this one is really just perfect. Really a dream come true. And I think it is an advantage to have the island to walk around on....

The bungalows are beautiful. We had the Plunge Pool Villa which was absolutely lovely. A beautiful bedroom, bathroom with large shower and bathtub, as well as a big deck. Surrounded by tons of flowers and jungle.

The beach is a dream. Super soft white sand and mostly clear water (depends on the tide). Free Kayaking, Paddle boarding, snorkeling etc. Snorkeling and corals are just so-so but enough to spend an hour or so. Some nice fish including baby rays etc.

If we need to critique: Service is extremely slow in the restaurants even though a lot o staff stand around (20 minute wait for a drink...) Breakfast choice is not exactly huge and it is a CRIME not to have more fresh squeezed juices to start the day on a tropical island for a Hotel of that price class.
Also the dinners and lunch prices are a bit high since the portions are tiny. So a 75 Ringit fish is really just a small fillet without any rice or other side dishes and thus will leave you quite hungry... But is all tastes really really good so that we didn't mind ordering more :-)

The Infinity pool is just perfect and was never very crowded.
The canopy walk was also great.

Just loved it. Will come back for sure.

Great for families and couples. Singles will feel a bit lost I guess....

Diving is handled from the sister resort

I was in Bunga Raya in the begginings of october of 2013. The mixed of jungle and the beach makes the best conbination ever. If you want a paradisic place where you can relax and turn off your cell phone, Bunga Raya is the best option you can make.

The employees are great. Always smiling, always available to help you... But we can't forget that we're in a country which culture it's totally different from ours. So, sometimes the service was slower than you expect. Many times we went lunch/ dinner half hour before to start eating at the moment we want to. We try the spa twice. The first time was really great; the second time not so great... Average! But the experience was worth it.

Keep in mind that you NEED to bring a insect repellent. Here, it'll be your best friend.

One suggestion: if you come to celebrate something with your wife/girlfriend, book a pavillion dinner for a dinner in the wine cellar. I did that and i can tell that was a moment that i'll remember for all my life. Unique!

Enjoy your stay. You'll love it!

If you're looking for luxury in Borneo - look no further! The island has two sister resorts: Bunga Raya; and Gayana Eco Resort.

We stayed 4 nights in Bunga Raya and it was total perfection. It is private, the sea is warm, facilities are all top class.

On arrival in Kota Kinabalu (KK) one can go straight to Jesselton Point (15min taxi), where the hotel has staff and a lounge ready to receive hotel guests and frequent speedboats to the island for both resorts. There are periodic complimentary speedboats between the island and KK but we never went once, the resort was so fabulous.

Stayed in a deluxe room (villa 8) which was absolutely incredible. On top of all luxury amenities, two minibars were re-stocked daily with free water, coke and beer. There is a buffet breakfast (fruit, continental, eggs, omelettes, etc) and guests may also one complimentary dish from a breakfast menu - huge portions and all delicious!

The two restaurants (Pentai Grill and Longhouse) are fabulous; everything we ordered was absolutely delicious I would have to recommend it all! Prices are also great - no hidden nasty surprises whatsoever.

The Jungle Spa was incredible - I had the water harmony 1 and it was worth every penny. Therapist was Hamesha (I think!) and she was absolutely wonderful. Note that prices on the spa menu are also subject to tax (10% service and 6% tax, or some such - same with most things in Borneo) but for what you get it is still an absolute steal!

Kayaking and snorkelling are complimentary, and the bay is so gorgeous it is worth doing both. Other watersports are available of course but we didn't have time to try out.

We took the boat to the sister resort, Gayana, one evening and had a tour of the marine centre. All villas are over the water in Gayana, a little closer together so nice if you're in a group, but if you're looking for the best for privacy I'd go for 46, overlooking the island or 45 overlooking the sea. If you want the best, the Palm Villas are outstanding - very private, designed in total luxury.

We ate at Gayana'sAlu Alu seafood restaurant where AK helped us choose from the menu - the lobster is to die for (steamed with garlic), as was everything else!

I should also mention that there are wild boars and macaque monkeys roaming around Bunga Raya - don't let it put you off, it added to the amazing experience! They keep their distance and all of the rooms are very safe.

Every member of staff was extremely accommodating, friendly and polite, the facilities are definitely 5 star. I will definitely be going back as well as recommending to family and friends looking for a luxury beach holiday.

Room Tip: Deluxe villa 8 is the only deluxe villa on two levels. Plunge pool villas are slightly smaller so do...

We stayed there for a friend's wedding and didn't know what to expect. On arrival, as we got off the resort's boat, we were greeted by the manager and a smiling friendly staff that welcomed us with a drink and fresh towels, what a nice first (and lasting) impression it left on me. Check in was a breeze and we were taken to our bungalow on a golf cart, feeling already like royalty. The room is very spacious and the high ceiling displayed some very attractive artistic painting. At every corner we found some goodies (amenities, magazines, welcome gift, fruits) that once again demonstrated attention to detail. The decoration was luxury without excess, the private access and the beautiful view from the balcony added to the charm of the place. The room is very private and you can be completely isolated from the world if you wish to. Staff was always readily available to come and pick us up and take us to the communal areas.
Food and drinks were at reasonable price, my only little minus would be for the breakfast, as they didn't have any cooked options or cheeses/meats, only serving fruits and some pastries.
This was really very little considering all the pluses, the excellent service, the beautiful pool and rooms.
We had a terrific time and my friend's wedding was beautiful, I definitely recommend looking into it if you are after a destination wedding.

Stayed at Bunga Raya for a long weekend over the Malaysian holiday. Have to say that staff were extremely helpful and had obviously had a significant input of customer care in their training programme. The transfer from airport to resort was efficient and well timed - prebooking essential!
Hotel bungalow (no 46) was spacious, very clean and stylish - lots of local character and influence. It is almost the furthest point away from the centre of the resort, but good for exercising off the well portioned meals. Staff always accommodating with transport via golf buggies.Mini-bar (mostly gratis was a pleasant touch as were the usual slippers and gowns. The steps to the bungalow were a bit precarious as the installed lighting was inoperative. The bungalow was very much in the trees, but had a great verandah, Bose radio/cd player, TV/video with an acceptable range of channels but limited choice of DVD.
Pool and beach exceptional; limited selection of water sports, but small sailing cats great fun and reasonably priced.
The food selection in Koi restaurant was reasonable, but the service and food quality were very good and good respectively. Breakfast was very good, with off the menu request honoured. I'd probably have a bit of an issue with the price of the wine, but excellent selection - I'm sure wine sales are low. The offer of the first free drink from a reasonable selection of cocktails is an excellent idea.
Certainly consider a repeat holiday.
One point to note, that I had to cancel the originally planned visit, but the hotel were very accommodating in allowing me to change dates.

Room Tip: Not a resort for the less mobile.
