Visited the Old Anchor for the first time since the new owners have taken over, and what a difference! The ambience in the bar area is friendly and professional. With Kim and Mark as your genial hosts, you will want to keep coming back, as they look after your every need. This establishment is only a few minutes walk from our home, so we are very lucky to have such great facilities within easy reach.
We were celebrating our Wedding Anniversary, and treated ourselves to a meal in the newly-refreshed Ivory Quays restaurant, attached to The Old Anchor. The decor is great, fresh and modern, and the attention to detail obvious, with glittering cutlery and sumptuous chairs and table linen. We had a three-course A la Carte menu, all food beautifully prepared and presented, and very tasty too! All complemented by attentive (but not intrusive) waitress, the lovely Kim, who could not do too much to ensure we were happy and satisfied.
For after-dinner drinks, we retired to the bar area at front of house, where we chatted to Mark and Kim, who are a thoroughly lovely couple. The bar area has been transformed into a welcoming, clean and friendly environment, comfortable and "country-pubby". There is Sky TV for those who want it, but it's not obtrusive.
My wife was even invited to look at the newly-refurbished bedrooms, which she pronounced to be very clean, fresh and welcoming, a credit to the Pub and Hotel. Much hard work has been invested, it is clear to see, in rejuvenating this whole establishment.
All in all, a great visit to a newly-invigorated pub that will definitely be a regular haunt for us from now on.
Keep up the great work!

This bar/restaurant/hotel is now under new management and was a reccomendation from a local customer I was visiting on business. The bar area was pleasant, served a good range of beers and lagers in addition to some excellent wines. It was a nice atmosphere with a good selection of background music. The pool table which was tucked away and the SKY Sports channels added to the overall impact of this area.

The restaurant was one of the best areas I have seen in a local public house. It was decorated to a very high standard and would make an ideal venue for birthdays, anniversaries, company social events, etc. It also managed to offer an atmosphere that would appeal to all age groups and types. The choice of food and the quality was of a very high standard and was complimented by a good selection of fine wines. Although this was of a high quality the price point was in my opinion very resonable as I would have been only too happy to pay a little more for the overall experience.

The bedrooms were of a good standard and had all the major facilities that would be expected including tea/coffee/biscuits, bath, shower and flat screen TV with free to air channels. The breakfast was also of a high standard with full english, cereals, fruit juice, fruit, etc on offer.

Last but certainly not least, the new owners were very welcoming, attentitive and always ensured that all customers were enjoying their experience. I am obviously not aware of the service that was offered before the new management, however, I would highly recommend The Old Anchor to anyone staying in the Colchester area. Since my visit I have provided details to my friends and colleagues. I have stayed in many hotels in this area including some top brands for the past 20 years, however, I will certainly be staying at the Old Anchor from now on

This Pub and Hotel is under new management, with a newly refurbished Restaurant called the Ivory Quays. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Also stayed overnight and the rooms were very comfortable and clean.

if you ever want to stay at an 'ole country pub' with a cheery landlord then this is definately NOT the place to be. Surly staff, pounding housemusic making it impossible to have a conversation is exactly what you get. Ok you think if its full to the rafters of joyful revellers, but alas when there are 6 people in the place staring woefully into their beer then the mark has been well and truly missed. on top of a that to be charged nearly £2 for a cup of tea with breakfast, bearing in mind that we had paid for bed and breakfast is absolutely beyond me. Terrible terrible place which i shall never grace again unless by some misfortune st peters gates arent open to me and i'm cast into hell for eternity.. in which case this would fit the bill nicely

Room Tip: rooms clean and basic. shower didnt work and no attempt to repair or reolve

Lovely building in a very pleasant area. Rooms basic but clean. Staff unhelpful bordering on downright rude - you know who you are! The rooms are not tidied during your stay and tea and coffee not replenished (the milk and cream on the tea tray was sour). In fact after taking the money for the room I think they would prefer not to have to see or speak to guests again. Be aware that if they do you the 'favour' of cooking a breakfast then they charge separately for tea and coffe at £1.50 and £1.75 per cup but do not tell you until you are paying.

I would most definitely not stay here again There are far more hospitable places to stay in this area. The nearby Travelodge it superior to this place.

Room Tip: The front rooms are on a very busy main road. Unless you are a heavy sleeper you will get no sleep a...
