We went here for my birthday (had booked a trip to Bologna at the weekend, but had to cancel, so I chose Essex instead!!!).
I thought that the hotel was great. We stayed in room 9 which was a triple room (we'd booked a luxury double, but guess those were taken as we checked in at nearly 11pm). Bed was huge and actually really comfy- and I'm someone who does get a bad back easily. Nice crisp white bed linen and soft towels.
Lovely walnut wood furnishings. Nice selection of teas and biscuits and normal size kettle! Flat screen TV with a built in DVD player was a bonus (they lend out DVDs from a selection downstairs, but I would consider bringing/buying your own as theirs were a bit old and boring). Bathroom was large with a separate wc. Only downside was that the bathroom and wc both had two external walls adn so were freezing. We kept the door shut to keep the bedroom warm. When I tried to run a hot bath, admittedly at close to midnight, the water was only lukewarm which wasn't enough.
Breakfast was quite good but served by quite a harried chap (he'd also been the night porter, not sure if he was the owner, but he was doing everything!!!). Library downstairs had some very comfy looking sofas but books were again, not all that.
The best part of our stay, tho' was the fitness centre. It is currently being upgraded (tho' this will take only 2 days as all is built, it is just a matter of shifting the gym equipment across apparently). The staff were super friendly, all the gym-goers were really cheery and there was a fantastic atmosphere. Good gym equipment, fab huge 20m pool, massive sauna and steam room. And, oddly, 2 courts of Tudor/ Real Tennis. This is really old fashioned and very unusual. There are only about 40 courts in the world and 2 are here. Free lessons from world champions are available!
A really excellent stay, I would go back!
