“Green, peaceful, calm and relaxing stay”
Reviewed 29 January 2011

Located in a green compound surrounded by tropical woods at 18 km from Chaing Mai, this oasis of calm is ideal to either recover from Chiang Mai shopping hustle and bustle, or as a jumping board to the many attractions within a few kilometers. Several bicycles and MTBs are available for the guest, adding further to the leisurely stay. The bungalows are hyper clean, spacious, equipped with very good beds and mattresses, mosquito windows all around, a large combined Thai shower-toilet, and have a large veranda in front and small balcony in the back. Breakfast and dinner are home-cooked (and good!) and enjoyed on the open-sided covered common building. The excellent English-speaking hosts are very welcoming and you feel part of something, not just a 'client'. If it is green calm in a relaxing atmosphere you look for, this is it. I recovered from an arduous jungle trek here, with all windows open, listening to the jungle sounds floating in, and sleeping like a baby.

We found Ban Rai Tin Thai Ngarm Eco Lodge the most peaceful of places. It is located in a small village which we found to be an enjoyable walking distance from Mae Rim, about 45 minutes. A great feature is that the bungalows have fly screen windows (with wooden shutters for night time) and no glass. There's no air-con, you really don't need it as air circulates well in the high ceilinged rooms and there is an electric fan to help - which we didn't need. Everything is spotlessly clean and more stylish than many of the lodges we have stayed in. The authentic home cooked Thai food is fantastic (Western food was also made available). The grounds are, as all gardeners will know, a work in progress. That said, there is lush native planting around the bungalows; bamboo, young teak trees and tropical fruits including banana.

The bathroom was large, clean and there was plenty of hot water. Although isolated there is satellite TV in the bungalows and free wi-fi across the whole site with speeds that would put more expensive hotels to shame.

It's so peaceful, whether you want to practice yoga or meditation, use it as a base to explore from or just to lose yourself in a good book (as we did), this is the place to do it. There are plenty of local attractions that are just a bit too far to get to on foot but your host, Bele, will arrange travel and tours.

The 'eco' aspect of any tourism offer always raises a 'greenwash' concern for me. Here it is well considered and balances consumption with comfort, food is seasonal and locally sourced. Bicycles are available and you are encouraged to use them, the grounds are planted up with native species. An existing travel infrastructure can be used without the need to create new.

All in all a great place to stay, we'll definitely be back and for longer next time.

WoW!!!, is all i can say, I thought i had died and gone to heaven, this place is 3 acres of beautiful grass grounds, with fruit trees, bamboo, fish ponds and the most amazing location and the most wonderful hosts that you are ever likely to meet, from the moment that Panom picked me up at the train station, till the moment i left, i was treated like one of the family, Panom and Petchura are two of lifes treasures, and there knowledge of the culture, the religion, and the surrounding country side is amazing,
but what is more amazing is the wonderful accommodation with a huge bed, air conditioning, cable tv, home cooked breakfast, and home cooked evening meals, I was spoilt because i was the only guest at this time, but i have no doubt everybody would get the same welcome, this place is perfect to relax and just take a stroll around the hills and temples or a walk to the waterfalls, or take an organised tour from there office in Chaing Mai, I loved it, my only regret is that 4 days was not long enough, im going to come back for a few weeks hopefully next year and with rates starting at BHT1000 per night its the best bargain in Chaing Mai

We arrived at the backpacker's paradise to find a secluded lodge with ponds and beautiful fruit trees. We did not stay overnight as we were dinner guests for the evening, although it's the perfect place to get away from the busy life in Chiang Mai or other surrounding cities in Thailand. The covered patio was beautiful for our dining experience, while we listened to the crickets and frogs in the serene park-like setting. The hosts are the most kind and welcoming people ever! Our evening at the Tin Thai Ngarm Eco Lodge was a most memorable experience!

A new guesthouse, not yet featured in any travel websites or travel books. We found it by accident by going to Thai Culture Holidays in Chiang Mai ,(find it in the Lonely Planet) the language teacher and her husband had just opened it 6 months ago.
Located 18 km north of Chiang Mai into the mountain area to a small town of Mae Rim. Through the village and down a dirt road to the guesthouse. When we came over a little crest we saw it – Shangri-La! There are 3 huge fish ponds (each 1/2 a swimming pool size) surrounded by lots and lots of planted fruit and nut trees. There are 3 very Thai looking cabins (one is still under construction). They are airy cabins with screened windows with shutters on three walls. There appears to be only enough wall to hold the windows in. They have a tiled front veranda, with 2 cushioned arm chairs and coffee table. The room is huge!! A king size bed, single bed, desk, and armoire, and still plenty of room to move around. The back has sliding patio doors leading to the back veranda , with 2 wooden chairs and table, that overlooks a valley and into the jungle. You have to look past the bamboo that is growing less than a metre from the veranda, and past the banana trees. The bathroom is just off the veranda and is the size of a very large walk-in closet.

There is a huge open air 2 level dining hall on the edge of the largest fish pond. The hall’s main eating area is teak tables and loveseat style benches. The level closest the fish pond has cozy little tables and chairs just feet from the pond. They give you lovely cloth slippers to wear since they feel the teak color tile floor may be chilly.

There is a big hill to the east, which offers the most spectacular view of the sunset descending behind the mountains. The sky is always hazy and it turns a beautiful rich orange at sunset. When contrasted with the various shades of blue and purple of the mountains, it is indeed breathtaking.

The night is filled with the sounds of crickets and frogs and the fountain that is just outside our window and the occasional jing-kok cough of a gecko.

They provide mountain bikes and map to the many tourist destinations that are only a few easy biking kilometers from the guesthouse; The Tiger farm, Monkey farm, Orchid farm, Snake farm, and Elephant farm, to name a few. Cooking classes are offered in a nearby location, as well.

The location may be beautiful, but it is NOTHING compared to the inner beauty of our hosts. Both speak excellent English. Panom offers excellent tours to some incredible temples and provides the unique perspective and knowledge of having been a monk for 10 years.
