“Must go again....”
Reviewed 22 March 2014

We made a one-night last minute booking; if only we could have stayed longer! From the warmth of the welcome when we arrived to the manifold charms of the house and the excellence of the food and service, it was all near-perfect. As others have remarked, it is a country house, rather than a hotel. The house has a wonderful distinctive scent of woodsmoke, piles of wellies and magazines for the guests, sinky squashy sofas and chairs....We have often been for lunch over the past twenty years, but never stayed. Now we have, we want to go again!
Apart from a pudding that was a bit over-complicated, there was nothing to criticise; although for those who want a large hotel with pools and shiny new everything, (and I like these things on occasion) this is not that hotel.
Gravetye is very well placed to do lots of exploring of historic properties and gardens; we visited chartwell and Nymans. Perhaps Glyndebourne next time...

Room Tip: We stayed in Ash, which is beautiful, and wonderfully sited, overlooking the rear garden. It has a...

Thank you for your review. We are very well positioned for exploring the Sussex countryside where there is a wealth of historic houses and beautiful gardens, though please spare plenty of time to enjoy Gravetye’s own famous garden! Kind regards Andrew Thomason Managing Director

I'm an Angophile so naturally this would appeal to me. One of the great properties In all of England. Fabulous food, impeccable service,Trout fishing, and incomparable gardens makes this place one of a kind. The architecture embodies everything I love about England. Gravetye will bless you.

Our daughter bought us a night at Gravetye Manor for Christmas. What an amazing gift. From the second we passed through the gates until we left it felt like we were private guests at a country house.
The personal welcome was lovely and our comfortable room, Bay, kept us cosy on a very cold and wet day. We had the set dinner and it was delicious with the suggested wines. I think what made the stay so special was the service. It is very rare to find staff who are so well trained; never glibly bothering us with the inane " how is your meal?" that you so often get every few minutes. But we felt that they would just have known somehow if we had not been happy, as they were subtly monitoring us all the time, anticipating our needs before we were even aware of them ourselves!
It was just a shame that the weather was so bad and so wet that we could not appreciate the grounds at all, but we were able to have a lovely walk around Wakehurst Place.
My favourite touch was to go back to our room after dinner to find the Radio Times open on the correct page on our bed next to to the remote - how lovely is that -oh to have someone to do that at home!
I would recommend this hotel to everyone who wants to completely relax and spend quality time with a special person. Thank you to everyone at Gravetye.

This was indeed a top Christmas present from your daughter, I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay regardless of the weather. I always say that it doesn’t matter, everyone that comes to stay in winter is prepared and most get kitted out and enjoy the numerous walks from the hotel, returning back for afternoon tea in front of a roaring log fire. We look forward to welcoming you back, maybe this summer? Kind regards Andrew Thomason Managing Director

Thank you Mike and Paul for a wonderful visit once again last Sunday. Joe and I have been to you before and as always it doesn't disappoint. Beautiful food (lunch) and service as always and a lovely walk in the grounds afterwards. Followed by coffee by the fire on our return. You all couldn't have done enough for us and we love going there, so pleased to see that it is still the same and nothing has changed.

Thank you again for a wonderful afternoon.

We visited last weekend for lunch to celebrate my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. From the moment the doorman opened the car doors to let us out, to the moment he opened them again for us to get back in, we felt as though we had been transported back to a different era - a gracious country house weekend. The staff and surroundings are simply superb. We were waited on with such attention to detail but in a calm and serene manner but with a dash of humour too! The food was excellent; well presented and the wine to match. Unfortunately, my father-in-law's health kept us from exploring the grounds but we will return. Particularly as my parents-in-law suggested we book a table to celebrate our 25th w/a in September - on them! My husband and I are determined to return to stay. I don't like using the word "experience" but visiting Gravetye is just that - it's not just about the dining.

This is a country house hotel and restaurant which we visited on a pleasant day. The setting is lovely and we enjoyed a walk in the gardens. Lunch was in an excellent dining room and we were served by attentive staff. The food was mediocre and should have been hotter. There was a set menu with four choices of main course and also an al la carte menu. We had the former which at £35 per person plus service charge of 12 1/2% was high for what we had. There was an extensive but expensive wine list and a small glass of wine averaged £10.
This is an attractive place to visit and probably for an occasion rather than Sunday lunch. . However it has great potential but generally seems to cater for people who have little regard for the value of money.

Room Tip: Did not stay, we had food only

It is always interesting to hear people’s views and how diverse they. For everyone that loves you and thinks the food is amazing and great value there will always be the reverse. I am sorry Gravetye didn’t work for you for Sunday lunch, perhaps our a la carte menu would be more to your liking? Sunday lunch remains quite traditional by request. Thank you for your comments. Kind regards, Andrew Thomason Managing Director.

We have never left a review before today but having just returned from the Valentine Day event at the hotel we felt compelled to do so. From the moment we arrived in the wind and rain we were greeted by the staff holding umbrellas to accompany us and our luggage to the reception; the staff were excellent throughout the stay, they were polite attentive and friendly. The lounge had a large welcoming log fire where we enjoyed scones and afternoon tea. We were greeted by the Managing Director who was anxious to welcome us to his hotel in a most friendly way. Our room (Chestnut) was large, comfortable and well appointed. The seven course 'taster' menu was excellent and when it was brought to their attention that my wife would not eat some of the courses they changed them to suit her and re-printed the menu in line with the courses. The hotel is superb and cannot be faulted in any way. We look forward to staying there again in the near future.

Room Tip: Chestnut was first class but they are all of very high standard

Valentine’s day is always popular at Gravetye Manor, such a pity the weather was so beastly! However, as you say, once inside the cosy feel takes over. I am pleased you enjoyed the evening and thank you for your comments. Kind regards, Andrew Thomason Managing Director
