“Good food”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

Visted again for an evening meal, as usual food and service were excellent. Not the cheapest but quality was good. We had the table by the toilets which is not ideal due to the number of people walking past.
My only complaint would be that portion control varies enormously depending on what you order, some were definitely on the light side.
All in all very good and the sort of pub I'd love as my local.

We came for lunch at the cat, the staff service was excellent and we were very well looked after. The food has had rave reviews however we thought the food was ok but we have had nicer food elsewhere so not as special as we had anticipated which was a disappointment. Overall a good pub, but not one of our top 5!

I stayed at The Cat Inn for 2 nights has part of my wedding down the road at Wakehurst Place.

Firstly, Andrew was incredibly accommodating and helpful as he moved in a further 2 beds to the room in order to sleep myself, the Best Man and Usher. I had sent him a fair few emails leading up to this with various requests and questions and each of them was answered promptly and courteously. The 2 spares beds were removed without fuss for the second night as it was just me and the bride the next night!

The room we stayed in (Grand Suite – Room 2) was absolutely lovely. It is a beautiful 2 tiered, light and airy room with nice period features. The room was such a good size that it easily accommodated the further 2 beds we required on the 1st night. There was plenty of bottled water in the room and an excellent selection of tea and coffee (including a Nexpresso machine). The TV was more than adequate with Freeview and the free Wi-Fi was very useful. The adjoining bathroom was also excellent – large and impeccably clean (like the rest of the room) and was well stocked with soaps/shampoos etc). Sleep quality is top notch. The room also includes a tremendous breakfast, more of which I’ll comment on. At £150 per night, it was something of a bargain.

As mentioned above, breakfast is excellent and a very hearty affair. Fresh fruits, juice, cereal and yoghurt adorn your table on arrival. A variety of cooked and continental breakfasts are available and each time we opted for the traditional English. Hungry people will not be disappointed! The portion is very generous (even by my standards) and the quality is excellent, with particular homage paid to the bacon and sausage. You can even tell that even the tea and coffee is of good stock. One minor, very minor criticism here – the bread used for the toast wasn’t quite to my liking (seemed to be a granary, probably a good one, but I’m a white toast person!). But all in all this is possibly one of the best breakfast’s you find anywhere.

Moving onto the pub side of things – wow, this is what I call a proper pub. Very attractively decorated, very olde world with lots of little side rooms running off the bar area. There are too few pubs like this nowadays and it was a pleasure to enjoy a pint in there before a meal. Plenty of regulars and locals pass through and there is a good atmosphere.

Food is of a very high standard. It won’t suit those on a budget but for your money you get excellent quality and a good sized portion. I had the steak (one off the specials) – it was incredible. Service in the dining area is very good, staff were attentive without being intrusive.

This is a tremendous pub/restaurant with rooms and thoroughly deserves its yearly mention in the Good Pub Guide. I will visit as often as possible!

Room Tip: The grand suite (room 2) is very spacious.

I have to agree with a previous reviewer about portion control. The food is lovely and very fresh but not large enough to fill at dinner unless you have a pudding. It could easily be excellent (and we don't have enormous appetites!)

The best hospitality breakfast and dinner were superb the owner Andrew was a delight to be around and his staff the same highly recommend this great little place. Rooms were great too small but not too small. My husband and I had a 5 day stay. The village has a great atmosphere and plenty of walking around the quaint little streets

A really good village pub. Welcoming, relaxing, friendly service, good quality food. Never disappoints.

Haven't stayed in the rooms yet but they look lovely. A good excuse to return...as if one were needed.

Set in an idyllic English country village, The Cat Inn ticks most of the boxes. Friendly, smart - fresh flowers, clean presentation, nice paintings, good menu. Could be described as a smart gastropub, I guess. Food was freshly cooked and then came nicely presented. Good range of beers being enjoyed by the locals, who by their genuine banter were adding to the atmosphere. Some varied areas for dining around the pub offering semi-private little alcoves for small groups. Thoroughly recommended. Would like to try the accommodation.
