“An overdue visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

This was my first trip to the Folly, even though my family have been visiting the Island for years and we have tried many of the eating establishments there (other family members have, but I have not).

The Folly is in a beautiful location, overlooking the River Medina, although the journey to it is not the easiest - a road with many potholes and some very vicious speed bumps. We visited for lunch on a Friday, and the choice of food was excellent, with a good range of specials on the board.

The food lived up to my expectations, considering the reports I had heard - the lamb cutlets I had were cooked perfectly - and there was a good range of drinks to supplement the meal. Unfortunately the dessert that I ordered from the specials board had sold out, but the replacement was more than adequate.

A long overdue visit, and one that I will definitely repeat.

“Lovely spot but poor breakfast”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

Called in on our way to Shanklin for breakfast after ferry crossing. The breakfast was poor sausages were tough think they had just been reheated not very good value have had much better at other Old English Inns. Also asked for scrambled egg instead of fried but apparently this wasn't possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lovely location but think we'll give it a miss next time and eat on the ferry!!

“worth the effort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

Takes some finding, either by boat, tide permitting , or down a long rutted road, but worth the effort in either case. Great food and beer and a wonderful veiw of the Medina river. Perfect for a sunny lunchtime.

“Great Inn next to rental pontoons for boaters”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

This little classical gem of a pub sits right on the east bank of the tidal Medina River in the countryside upriver from Cowes, England on the Isle of Wight. We got here by boat for a four day rental of their visitor pontoon. We are sailing cruisers from USA aboard Angel Louise our 40 foot retirement boat-home. (Note for boaters: 4-day stay here is £80 total and £5 pp for water taxi) the pub is popular with good food and average service but the view and location on this historic island is off the charts wonderful! They have a rural road up on the East side of the river to get to the pub if you drive up from Cowes after taking the Wightlink Ferry from Lymington, or the ferry from Southampton! A great day in the historic area whenever & however you make the trip.

“Great atmosphere, staff couldn't care less”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

I have visited The Folly a few times now, each time giving the terrible service the benefit of the doubt and returning.

It seems the guys behind the bar are having a competition of who can go the longest without serving, avoiding eye contact and not acknowledging us at all.
Seriously, rude.

The place could be so great if you invested in better staff who had customer service skills. Form someone who spent 10 years working in pubs and restaurants, I wouldn't dream of treating paying customers this way.

Onto the food- arrived within a minute of us being back to the table so of course microwaved but was actually quite nice as usual. Considering we were in a large group, it would have been nice if one of the waitresses asked if everything was okay.

Reluctant to return again as would rather spend money elsewhere and have our custom appreciated.
