“Hiking in Tokai Forest”
Review of Tokai Forest

Tokai Forest
Reviewed 30 July 2014

I went for a hike in Tokai Forest now end of July. The footpaths are wonderfully maintained, the hiking trails clearly marked, thoug hthe further up you go, the narrower the paths - wear solid footgear. At this time of year the weather is extremely changeable, so wear layers and don't forget a rain jacket. There is a little coffee shop by the parking area which is cozy and comfortable, but if heading up the mountain, take a water bottle and maybe something to snack along the way. I made my way through the massive pines - it's gorgeous!! and ended up on top of the mountain where the abundant fynbos and some proteas were in bloom. Breathtaking!
I only spent an afternoon here, and the forest is huge and the hiking and mountain bike trails extensive! I shall certainly go back to explore more!! It's stunning and a fantastic active day out. How fit you need to be depends on how far or how high you wanna go / climb.

Surrounded by pine trees you can enjoy the braai facilities. To enter the area is about R20 per person. Free if you own a Wild Card from SanParks.

Park at the Arboretum parking, and jog or cycle from there. It is truly beautiful, you cannot get closer to nature than this. There is a tearoom that serves coffee and light meals.

Tokai is known for its baboon concervation and the very first thing we encountered when we stopped there was indeed a massive male that tried to grab food from other visitors. There are staff who chase them away in a decent manner so no worries.

The place is kept very clean and natural. There are facilities to make fire and a toilet facility is by the entrance gates.

It was troublesome how the squirrels kept dropping heavy twigs and seeds from the high trees that fell on the table and cars with big bags.

Tokai has a walking trail as well as a bike trail that seems to draw alot of attention.

An overall nice place.
