“This is the perfect place to rest, recover and recharge with amazing views”
Reviewed 27 April 2013 via mobile

I just spent two nights at ferndale with my 60 something mum and 2 year old son. This place suited us all perfectly, the peace and quiet for me, amazing views and plenty of places to sit and relax whilst looking at the pristine Hawkesbery River for mum and all sorts of adventures and things to touch for my little boy. The Hosts Chris & Kee are so accommodating and welcoming, I can't wait to take my husband and friends.
The location is perfect for day tripping around the district. My son loved the river ferries and watching all the boats on the river.
Come prepared with picnics, wine etc as there are no shops about but Kee does a great breakfast which is a great way to start the day.
Don't go here expecting a raging party or great night spots, go here because you want to stop and hear yourself think, breath in the fresh air and watch the mist roll in whilst having your first morning coffee.

A great place to relax and unwind and get away from technology. Rooms are clean and basic have everything you need to drop out for a few days. The ferry to cross the Hawkesbury is only down the road so Ferndale is a great place to explore the region. The hosts are lovely and its well worth taking the meals option as Kee and Chris are great cooks

Room Tip: Take mozzie spray or a plug in

Stumbled upon Ferndale Retreat by accident but glad I did. I was attending a pig handling course on a nearby farm and was advised by the organisers to use accommodation in Windsor. However, with a number of other events happening in the area this last weekend everything in Windsor and nearby Richmond was fully booked. So scouring the internet I came across Ferndale. A quick chat with Kee, one of the owners, over the phone convinced me it was the place to stay - Kee was very friendly and helpful, with a manner which told me that she and her husband Chris were committed to ensuring their guests feel welcomed and at home. As other reviewers have commented the Retreat is not 5 Star and shows it's age in places although Chris is clearly working his way through an extensive upgrade. But, for me, that's not what I want from a rural country retreat - the cabins are solid, clean with the critical amenities which make them very functional - and critically the setting and views are stunning! The breakfast (included in the room rate) is in the main house, which is home to Kee, Chris and their two sons, and had the full range of hot and cold options. When the start time of my course changed for the second day there was no problem in having breakfast at 6.30 even though it was a Sunday. I also took up the option of the evening meal on both evenings. The quality of the food, like the breakfast, was very good and plenty of it. As a single traveller Kee and Chris made particular efforts to keep me company and introduce me to fellow guests. All in all a great place to stay for a quiet, relaxing rural weekend on the river!

We headed out to Ferndale for a relaxing bush escape on the river - and that's exactly what we got!
The cabins were simple but clean and comfortable, the surroundings were spectacular, and the hosts were lovely.
We arrived early, but they made space for us - even upgrading us to a bigger cabin with a better view.
If you like nature, peace and the simple comforts in life then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: room number 1 was brilliant and had a few extras like a dvd player. We would recommend getting a boa...

I have just attended the best ever venue for a quilters retreat weekend. Over the past 14 years I have attended numerous quilting retreats at three other venues and this is by far the best. Quilters do not need 5 star accommodation and this is more a very good 3 star retreat in cabins. We enjoyed having our own room and the accommodation was clean, spacious, comfortable and all that one needs: own ensuite with toiletries (soap, shampoo and conditioner, shower caps), hairdryer, all the linen needed, a good bed, desk and chair as well as an armchair, fly screens with a beautiful outlook to the bush.

The meals were absolutely superb, including choices for each of the three courses for dinner, a cooked breakfast, wonderful lunches and fabulous morning and afternoon teas.

The craft room was spacious enough for 20 quilters; it has excellent lighting and overlooks the picturesque Hawkesbury River. A spectacular peacock casually wandered round the guests.

The delightful owners Chris and Kee have been gradually updating this little piece of heaven in Lower Portland since that they purchased it a few years ago. I reached it easily with the help of my GPS taking my car on the local car ferry. What have I done! Now it might be hard to get a booking!

We first went to Ferndale for a quilters' weekend two years ago, and we were the first group there when Kee and Chris took over. We have just had our third annual quilting weekend there and have booked for 2013. This year we went for an extra day; next year we are going to add another day. As PippinCat says it is cosy and unpretentious, but Ferndale has everything we need - a large conference room with good lighting, cabins with comfortable beds, hot showers, flyscreens and airconditioning. The food was splendid. We seemed to be eating a lot, with morning and afternoon tea, but none of us felt weighed down, probably because of the lack of stodge. It was just good food well prepared.

The cabins are somewhat dated but they were a lot worse when Kee and Chris took over. They are gradually renovating the whole property and we see improvements every year. We love their attention to our needs, whether it is carrying our sewing machines up to the conference room, setting up the tables the way we want them, or coming outside on a rainy morning to find one of the boys going around with umbrellas for everyone. Ferndale wouldn't suit anyone wanting five-star accommodation, particularly since you can only get mobile phone reception beside a particular tree, imaginatively named the Mobile Phone Tree. We love it because we have what we need, the food is fantastic and we get an extremely warm welcome from Kee and Chris who have become friends. Our group of quilters adds to the experience, of course, with lots of warmth and lots of laughter.

We celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary here and had a great time. It is a very secluded location with great views of the Hawkesbury river and lots of easy bush walks close by. There are several nice drives in the area with historic buildings and a couple of good wineries. We had dinner there which was very nice & reasonably priced. The fully cooked breakfast was also excellent. As previously reviewed, the rooms are in need of updating, however ours was clean & adequate and the bed was comfortable. The hosts, Chris & Kee were very friendly and made us feel very relaxed and welcome. If you really want to "get away from it all" then Ferndale should be considered. There was no TV, wi-fi or mobile phone reception in our room, but available at other locations on the property, so it forced us to relax which was good. Don't expect 5 star rooms - enjoy the 5 star surroundings instead!

Room Tip: To get the better rooms get there early as rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis.
