Lovely hotel, staff exceptional reception staff very friendly and included our children in all discussions. Restaurant staff were fantastic, again catering for our children only small minor criticism was the carpet in our room was quite stained and grubby looking.

While traveling through Stratford-upon-Avon, my husband and I and our two teenage children spent a night at the hotel. The architecture and surrounding grounds are absolutely beautiful. The staff was friendly and accommodating, however meal service was quite slow due to a large business gathering. Our rooms were lovely and spacious (Shirley & Pritchard), although there was one problem. There was an overwhelming odor of sewage emanating from the master bathtub drain. Despite the efforts of the staff to chemically treat the drain, we had to use the facility sparingly and keep the bathroom door closed at all times. I would imagine that it was not the first time a guest experienced that inconvenience in that room. I understand that the property is old and that maintenance can be challenging. Hopefully that situation will be resolved. A gesture by management to atone for the inconvenience would have been appreciated, especially since the rooms were quite costly.

A must for visitors to England. Very British, or as British as a foreigner imagines it to be. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great. The room is clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay there for the night and highly recommend it as a place to get feel of old Britain.

PS: You need to move around to get mobile phone reception but it is expected when you are in the middle of lots of tall trees. Leaves absorb microwave energy.

My husband and I went to our friends wedding reception. Overall experience was disappointing. Beautiful surroundings, but the service, state of our room and the cost of drinks was outrageous. No spa or pool available. Unfortunately not a good experience as the bad things outweighed the good. Not a great experience for us.

Room Tip: Our room 19 had a grubby carpet with bits on the floor. There were cobwebs in the bathroom all arou...

Thank you for completing your review and the comments you have made. Firstly please accept my sincere apologies for the pool being out of order on the day you visited the hotel. This was unforeseen and emergency works have been completed, the pool is now fully operational. With regard to your further comments relating to service of the wedding, I am very surprised to hear this as we have received very positive comments from both the bride and groom and guests that attended the wedding. The prices of our drinks are reviewed on a regular basis and are competitive within the local market, I am sorry that you felt these to be over priced. In relation to your comments of your room, I would be grateful if you would contact me in order for me to address any concerns as we take pride in the standard of our rooms and any shortfalls would be immediately actioned. Once again please accept my apologies and I look forward to hearing from you. Jbowler@handpicked.co.uk kind regards

I stayed here recently with a group. The whole place has a wonderful feel about it, both inside the house and the grounds. My room was large & spacious and well equiped. I had breakfast lunch and dinner here and all the meals were very good. Service was a bit slow at breakfast but probably due to the large group of people who descended at the same time. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
I may visit again but this time with my partner. I can also imagine this being a great place for a wedding.

Room Tip: I gather that the rooms in the new part of the building are quieter but don't have as much charm...

My husband and I stayed during April to celebrate my birthday with a heritage package (dinner, bed and breakfast and a glass of wine). The hotel and grounds are absolutely stunning and the welcome we received was outstanding. I haven't ever felt so welcome before! I thought the interior of the hotel was beautiful but I can see why some have said its a bit tired. Our room was lovely (first at the top of the stairs over reception) it was quiet and had plenty of space plus everything you need. We visited the pool area which was really lovely and used the sauna. Dinner and breakfast were almost perfect and the staff really new there stuff. The choice of wines was extremely extensive. The only thing I could criticise was the sound system in the library and restaurant, it wasn't up to scratch quality wise but was also so quiet that there wasn't much of an atmosphere and you felt like you had to whisper over dinner so you didn't disturb anyone. We had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend and if you do stay make sure you walk down to the river!

My partner & I stayed here for one night to celebrate his birthday, right from the long drive up to the building we were impressed, someone came out and took our bags as soon as we approached reception! We were then greeted by a friendly receptionist! We were given a brief tour then taken up to our room (10) not a room with a view but every inside was fantastic! We noticed she we arrived the hotel had left my partner a drawing with a birthday message on the back - very nice touch! We were booked into the restaurant for 7.30 so heading downstairs a little early as advised. We were shown into the great drawing room, which really was beautiful. The manager Pawel made us feel welcome, talked us through the menu & bought us out some hors d'oeuvres which was a lovely touch. We chose our starters & mains and was then taken into the oak restaurant and seated with a gorgeous view of the gardens & church ruins. Our starters arrived and looked fantastic! I had the pigeon & my partner went for the chef speciality deconstructed club sandwich! We were both impressed. The gap between starters and mains was just right. I had braised beef & my partner had pork belly! Both were delicious! Desserts were ordered I had a white chocolate dish & my partner had glazed lemon tart, I had previously arranged for his plate to have a birthday message on it. So out it came with Happy Birthday in melted chocolate! Both were lovely. We decided to have a few drinks in the bar area where the staff are all friendly & happy to help. We had a wander around the beautiful grounds as the weather was still fantastic! There was a wedding on upstairs but you couldn't hear anything inside the building. We headed to bed and decided to order breakfast in bed for 9am (small charge) at 8.55 the phone rang to say breakfast was on it's way. For some reason the breakfasts weren't what we had ordered but were still fantastic. After breakfast we had a swift & easy checkout! Once again the receptionist was friendly! We had the most perfect stay & are now looking into staying at one of the other hand picked hotels :)
