“Cannot Be Faulted! A Superb Hotel!”
Reviewed 9 March 2009

I booked one night at Ettington Park as an Anniversary gift for my husband on their "Winter Break" deal (£139 for Champagne, Canapes, 3-Course Meal, Room and Breakfast) and could not believe what value for money the trip was!
The Hotel itself is stunning - in keeping with its original style but renovated to a level that made it clean and practical for a modern experience.
We took afternoon tea (finger sandwiches, homemade cake and scone, tea/coffee in white china and silver) in the exquisit drawing room and sat in the large bay window overlooking the grounds to the front with sun shining in on us.
Our room was a Standard room but was still very nice. Spotlessly clean, very tastefully decorated with some original features. We also had a very nice large ensuite bathroom with both shower and bath, stereo speakers through from the bedroom and low level blue lights (for using the loo without putting on the main lights, I suppose!)
The staff could not have been more helpful - nothing was too much trouble and they all maintained a lovely calm peaceful atmosphere which really made this beautiful mansion feel like home (albeit a very grand home!).
The Spa facilities (at no extra charge!) were great too - swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna - and we had them to ourselves at 10am the following morning.

For a romantic getaway or a well deserved treat to make you feel like Lord and Lady of the Manor, I could not recommend a better place to go!

My Husband and I decided to take a mini break away which coincidently was just in time for the winter promotion that Hand Picked Hotels had just launched. We were able to book the amazing Ettington Park Hotel for £139 (total) for both of us to include Dinner, Bed and Breakfast as well as a room upgrade upon arrival (which we got!) champagne and canapés before dinner and use of the beautiful pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi! What a brilliant offer for the winter blues.

From the main road you can see Ettington Park in its full glory and it really does look simply stunning. We drove up the winding drive and were incredibly looking forward to our one night stay in this beautiful hotel.

We were honoured our room upgrade – therefore we were able to move into an Executive room which was great as it meant that we had a separate living area downstairs with huge LCD TV, tea and coffee making facilities (fridge with fresh milk and water), huge sofa and table with two chairs, the bedroom was upstairs (staircase in your living room). The bed was so comfy - we both slept incredibly well with no disturbances in the night. The bathroom was small but was very clean.

We immediately took a walk around the hotel grounds which are truly stunning. The chapel is really quaint and the grounds are just superb. Inside the hotel the main lounge is huge with lots of different chairs which are very comfy – perfect for a lazy afternoon tea whilst overlooking the grounds.

The pool is gorgeous (just like you see in the pictures on the website) the chairs and beds have complimentary towels available meaning that you don’t have to bother with taking them with you. We only saw one other couple when we used the pool facilities on the Friday – this was just as we were about to leave as well. This meant that you really do have the place to yourself to well and truly relax!

We had our champagne and canapés in the main lounge just before dinner (perfect opportunity to choose what we wanted to eat!) The restaurant is very ‘manor’ like with oak panelling and high backed traditional leather chairs. We were offered freshly baked rolls to start (divine) we then choose pate and mackerel followed by the Pork / Lamb both were outstanding and the meat quite literally melted in your mouth. We both then had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Yes the menu is limited if you are on the Table d houte menu however unlike other review we thought the food was outstanding and much better then pub/restaurant standard. I would choose Ettington Park every time over a local pub/restaurant meal. Breakfast was again superb but after the night before we couldn’t manage much! Do try the homemade jams though as these are very tasty.

We left on Saturday morning to explore Stratford and the surrounding area – Bourton on the Water a particular fave with us both! Ettington Park is situated perfectly if you are planning on visiting Stratford up on Avon and don’t mind having to jump in the car though.

This place really is a little gem – good food, great surroundings, beautiful grounds, superb swimming pool and relaxing room. Perfect for couples who want a romantic getaway.

The only minus – staff could have been a little bit more friendly mainly on reception as the waitress in the Oak Room were excellent.

This luxurious country house hotel is located in its own extensive grounds about 5 miles outside Stratford-upon-Avon. Sympathetically converted from an old manor house, it has many Gothic features, yet has a wonderful warm feeling about it and is in good decorative order. First impressions were of busy, bustling, activity and professional and friendly staff. Our bags were taken to our room, which was large, plush and well-appointed, with a comfortable settee and large flat-screen TV. The bathroom was large and modern, though the TV volume control on the wall was broken, which meant being deafened whenever the TV was on. Dinner in the oak-panelled dining room was haute cuisine and excellent, only spoiled by the draught from the nearby external door, which seemed to be open frequently (just our luck to get a table by the door). Very small children seemed to be fed in a separate room, which made for a calmer atmosphere. Drinks were rather expensive (e.g. £7.25 for a G&T), but normal for that standard of hotel. Upstairs, our bed had been turned down and a weather forecast for the next day was left in our room - a nice touch. The room (Room 10) proved to be a little noisy, possibly from the lift, but this subsided overnight and was not a major problem.
Breakfast was served in all the public rooms on the ground floor, with the hot and cold buffet located in the main lobby and corridor (we ate in the library): an unusual approach, but it worked quite well. The food was good, though the hot buffet was a little limited in range and the plates were not heated. Checkout was trouble-free and our bags were taken to our car for us.
We had a special DB&B rate of £139 in total, for one night, which included an upgraded room, a glass of champagne each, canapes and table d'hote dinner (worth £35). It was first class value for an excellent hotel, which had a real buzz to it. It was professionally run with attentive and very friendly staff. Highly recommended, especially for families.

We thoroughly enjoyed a two night stay at the hotel, setting is magnificent and the decor is in keeping with the hotel. We stayed in the Kingmaker Room which was unbelievable - loads of room, furniture was new and of good quality. The surprise was the upstairs en-suite which was bigger than some hotel bedrooms we have stayed in and had its own television !!
The only faults we could make is the tea-making facilities were not topped up after the first night but we had just about enough to last so, in fairness, we never complained.
On the second night at dinner, the service was slow but there seemed to be several new staff being trained - we were in no hurry so it was of no particular concern.
The hotel far outweighed our expectations and we would certainly book into this hotel again. It is ideally situated for Warwick and Stratford-Upon-Avon.

We headed off to Ettington Park for our anniversary. We had gotten deal which meant we were upgraded to an Executive suite. It was large, but the bathroom was quite dated and I think the cleaner must have been having an off day! The headboard was very dusty and there were cobwebs hanging down in our room - number 9. Good job we werent disabled as there were steps down into our room!

We had dinner there (included in the room price) and I have to say it was lovely! Neither my boyfriend or I (vegetarian!) had any reason to complain and we had a great evening.

The bed however left a little to be desired! It felt a little unstable and in the morning in full daylight, it turned out that it only had 3 legs!!!! The furniture in the rest of the room was a little worn.

Breakfast was again entertaining. We had a good choice of buffet items - breads, pastries, fruit, cold meats and cheeses and also the full english breakfast included with a choice of eggs. I ordered the vegetarian breakfast with poached eggs and my boyfriend ordered the full english with fried eggs. I ended up with poached eggs, veggie sausages, mushrooms and BACON whilst by boyfriend ended up with a full english minus the BACON...

The location of the hotel is fantastic and it looks wonderful from outside. You cant help feeling it is looking a little tired on the inside and would benefit from a few internal changes such as a designated reception desk - the current set up is a little chaotic. The staff are also eclectic! We had forgotten the toothpaste and toothbrushes and asked for a replacement along with an extra bathrobe as we had only been given one. We got the bathrobe, but no toothbrushes appeared. We had to go down to reception to enquire about them to be told, they didnt have any!!

We paid £135 for dinner bed and breakfast and on the whole it was good value. If we had paid the full price, we'd probably have made more of the issues we had experience. The other Handpicked Hotels such as Wood Hall are better quality and vfm.

The moment you roll down the drive your jaw hits the steering wheel. It's an absolutely beautiful building, with raising turrets. Inside the decor isn't as grand, but then I guess modern hotels can't have icy winds blowing in from cracks in the masonry.
Our room was very nice, big bed, modern bathroom, tea and coffe (isn't that a kettle with sachets!?). Staff were super, very professional.
But the food...well....
We booked a Sunday night special dinner, bed and breakfast rate/ But you can tell they skimped on the dinner menu. It was probably on par with a beef eater, choice of chicken, beef (sunday roast), salmon... You get the picture! Certainly nothing to write home about! And was a shame as if I was the hotel's chef I would ensure that all guests could example my 'talents'.
So apart from the food the hotel was great, no complaints.

My fiance and I stayed here in Jan. 09. We stayed in an executive room, which was adequate, but not as I thought it would be. I'd stayed in the classic rooms previously and was quite happy with them - so if planning a stay, go with that option.

Upon entry there was a lounge area - very comfortable and furniture in keeping with the house (as was the case throughout). Upstairs there was a bathroom to one side and a bedroom to the other. These were in a converted loft space and were not spacious. The bathroom, in particular, was a disapointment. When the shower was turned on it resulted in flooding the floor as it was part of the bath (not a seperate shower!). The shower head would not stay in place when in use. Also, we had forgotten to bring toothpaste so my fiance called reception to request some. She was abruptly told that 'not all rooms had toothpaste as standard' but was told some would be brought to us. I would expect all toiletries to be supplied in a hotel of this standard and certainly in the exec. suites.

The bedroom was perfectly comfortable, but there was a double bed in an exec. room where I've slept in super-kings in the classic rooms.

The swimming pool/sauna/seam area closes at 8pm. To early. 10pm would allow for greater flexibility for guests wishing to use the facility in the evening to relax. Also, there are monitors of the bathing areas at the front desk facing outwards that other guests can see.

All-in-all, we had a pleasant stay but the general standard was not as it's been previously nor as one would expect from a Handpicked hotel. Unfortunately, as much as the location and building is beautiful, I'll not be staying at Ettington Park again.

  • Liked — The lounge area was comfortable.
  • Disliked — The bathroom was very poor.
