The walk to the falls is easy and comfortable. The reward is the falls, which make for good photography.

Great little set of water falls. Easy to photograph from the boring platform. Take a tripod if you want to do some time exposure shots.

Traveling through the Catlins knew the Purakanui Falls were a must stop. Starting the short walk on a path through the rainforest the first thing one notices is the sound of rushing water, cross a small bridge over the water feeding the falls and continue the path to the Falls; an amazing sight. Glad I was able to experience its beauty.

Nice water-fall.
You just have to walk some distance in but it is worth it.
When we went , not much water , but if after or during rain , I guess the water- falls will have lots more water.
Need to wear sturdy, track shoes as certain tracks are slippery.
Be careful if go down to the rocks , to the flats of the base of the falls as the rocks are wet and slippery.
You don’t have to but still can take good picture as there is a walkway with railings both sides.

One of the Catlins 3 main pretty waterfalls with a lovely forest walk which is just as nice as Matai falls. Unfortunately Purakaunui is very crowded so it definately detracts from the beauty of the place, as does the large number or European backpackers that insist on smoking in this beautiful environment. For this reason we preferred Matai falls. Definately worth spending some time at Wilkie Lake up the road also as it's lovely & seems to be overlooked by many.
