“Relaxed and friendly atmosphere with superb breakfast.”
Reviewed 8 September 2009

I have stayed at Shepherd's Croft five or six times now on business and always stay there when woring in the Penrith area.
Breakfast is superb and based on the largest sausage you're likely to see!
Shiona and Mike are always welcoming, always attentive to detail and it's a pleasure to return. Highly recommended.

We've stayed here 6 times now and have always had a very warm welcome. Its a great location with easy access to The Lakes and the Pennines - great if you want to escape the busy towns of the Lakes but still want to access the hills. Shiona's breakfasts are great (including the veggie option) and Mike is a mine of information when it comes to planning walks. The rooms are very clean and comfortable with good facilities. There are good pubs close by, one (gastro-type) just around the corner and another (with good pub food) at Langwathby.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are located in the beautiful Eden Valley - well situated for exploring the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northern Pennines, Hadrian's Wall and Southern Scotland. There's lots of good walking and cycling nearby. As we are 1 mile from the A66 and only 10 minutes from the M6 we are an ideal place to stopover if you are travelling to or from Scotland. Shiona & Mike converted Shepherds Croft from being a "Bank Byre" (a type of barn) into a large house in 1989, doing most of the work themselves. The house is unusual in that there are two ground floor levels - because the bank into which the barn was built slopes, so that the rear garden and patio are higher than the cobbled frontage. The layout of the house is ideally suited to B&B accommodation - all the letting rooms are on the same floor and there is a separate residents lounge/ dining room. The house is very warm. The walls are 2 foot thick! And all rooms have individually adjustable central heating radiators. We are only 50 yds from the village pub/restaurant, The Black Swan. The residents lounge/dining room is large enough for you to relax in comfort. We have assembled a comprehensive collection of information on local tourist attractions, but we are always willing to help you plan your stay with some local advice. Mike was a member of the local mountain rescue team for over 30 years. There is a range of games for you to play and you are welcome to sit in the conservatory, go onto the patio or into the garden. You can also borrow a book from our collection. Breakfast is served at the time of your choice usually between 08.00 And 09.00. ... more   less
