This review is for the Yhi Spa at the Gran Melia Palacio.
We were staying at the Sheraton La Caleta in Costa Adeje and went to the Gran Melia specifically to use the spa. We were seduced by the promise of the flotation tanks and beautiful website photography.
Perhaps it was also the perceived exclusivity that elevated our expectations? (We had to email the general manager to get special permission to visit the spa as there is a strict residents only policy. Upon arrival we were told that this policy is in place to stop hoards of people coming in and using the pools and sun loungers.)
Having enjoyed the spas of the Bahia del Duque, Plantaccion, Sheraton and Abama, amongst others, I can safely say that this was the worst one we've been to. By a long way.
It is big (in a mass market, Thompson holidays kind of way) and has an impressive list of facilities. The reality is that quantity does not mean quality. We found the spa manager unprofessional and rude. Lashings of black paint create a cheap nightclub overall feel. The changing rooms were dark and poorly equipped. Cheap toiletries and no hair conditioner available. The therapists were lovely but the treatments themselves distinctly average.
The manager need not have worried about us using the facilities of the hotel, we couldn't get out fast enough.
From what we saw, the 5 stars hanging above the door are an ambition, not a reality.
