“How English Pubs Should Be !!”
Reviewed 21 February 2006

My boyfriend and I stayed here on a Thursday and Friday night recently. Set in such a pretty little village, the location was utterly perfect for a romantic getaway.

We had dinner in the pub on Thursday night and enjoyed fresh mackerel and a delicious steak by candlelight and a roaring fire. It is such a cosy atmosphere and it is extremely easy to get so into conversation and forget how much wine you are consuming! (There are plenty of ales to choose from if that's your thing).

Friday was spent rambling in the beautiful countryside and in the evening we decided to treat ourselves to dinner in the restaurant. It was packed full of happy faces and the service was superb. Again, culinary delights ensued. Not cheap but thoroughly worth it. We then retired to the pub section to listen to the live jazz band.

The Griffin is the hub of life for the villagers but as a visitor you are made to feel extremely welcome. We stayed in the Maypole room in the Old Coach House which had a small 4 poster bed and a powerful shower.

If you enjoy English Country breaks, romantic chats in cosy, traditional surroundings you must go to the Griffin - you wont be disappointed.

We had an enjoyable break at The Griffin. It's a lovely spot with views over the downs, beautifully appointed rooms, delightful staff who made us feel really welcome and excellent food. It's not cheap but we felt represented good value for money. We will be back!

We have stayed at the Griffin Inn, Fletching, Sussex many times over the years and something keeps bringing us back. You have the charming staff, delightful rooms (particularly the 'Fletching Room') and wonderful bar food (there is a restaurant as well, but felt it was too 'nouveau cuisine' for us). A stay in the summer months means you can enjoy the wonderful garden overlooking the Downs and in the winter a lovely log fire in the cosy bar. And the small village is quiet and pleasant. Definitely recommend a long weekend there.
