“Great pub with excellent food, lovely garden and views”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

Return here time and again when in Sussex. For lunch, dinner, early evening drink, winter and summer. It's a great pub that's really got it right. Cosy inside rooms for the winter, and a huge garden with a number of 'spaces' for drinking/dining. Outside there are wooden pub tables, more formal dining tables on a terrace and an outdoor BBQ on the sloping lawn. Plus a separate outdoor bar. Good wine and, according to my beer drinking friends, some good local ales. Wish it was closer to home in London!

“Disappointing lunch from the bar menu”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

So looking forward to lunch here after a few years absence.

We both ordered slow roasted belly of pork with vegetables at £16 per person from the bar menu.
What actually turned up on our plates can best be described as a small portion of very fatty pork with hardly any meat. The vegetables were not as shown on the menu, we should have been served beans, potatoes and peas, but what we were actually served was courgettes, lots of beetroot and new potatoes, I hate beetroot. At no time did any member of staff check our food was acceptable and we left hungry.

Food prices shown on their web site bar menu are out of date e.g. Rib Eye of beef is £23 and not the £19 as shown on the menu. Its such a shame as the pub itself is lovely.

Maybe we had a poor experience, however based on our visit - poor value for money and plenty of choice elsewhere.

“Wish this was close to home!!”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

Stunning views over rolling countryside make this a fabulous place to enjoy barbeque food in the sunshine. We dined indoors however and were charmed by the ambience of this gorgeous gourmet pub (with rooms apparently). The daily a la carte menu was delightful and there is clearly a Spanish influence in both food and wine which we welcomed. Choice of food was excellent and quality of food very good although a little more expensive than you would normally expect to pay in a pub however this is of a very high standard so it can be justified and the popularity was evident given the number of people dining. Good car parking as the village car park across the road offers overflow spaces. Reservations a must.

“Magnificent food - poor service”
Reviewed 8 August 2014 via mobile

Firstly let me state that I eat here 4 or 5 times a year and that the food is fantastic and among the top 5 eateries in this part of the world.

That said however my experience yesterday has compelled me to write a review that may not be exactly glowing!

I ate in a party of 6 and we were celebrating my daughters birthday. The service initially was fine and then the waitresses disappeared and it all went 'pear-shaped' from there. The main course was delivered while we still had the starter plates on the table - the servers couldn't see that as the lighting was more 'non-existent' than 'romantic'. When they realised they hastily cleared the starter plates and the main course was served, that was the end of any contact with any staff for the next hour.

Had we been asked at any point if we needed more wine or drinks we would definitely have answered in the affirmative, but as we weren't the restaurant didn't get to sell us any! Which is a pity as the Pinot Grigio was delightful and full flavoured.

Eventually I went inside and asked if we could have the birthday cake served (which we had provided at their instruction as they don't do cakes - which is fair enough) and it was delivered with candles along with an enquiry from the chef as to whether we wanted any dessert! As it had been very nearly an hour since we had finished the main course we declined. In actual fact we had run out of delaying tactics and the 'surprise' element of the cake had long run out.

Fast forward another half an hour or so - I had to go inside to chase the bill as there had not been a single waiter/waitress to ask.

I will go back to the Griffin because the food is so good ( everyone was very pleased with their respective choices - and we covered most of what was on offer between us) and I assume that the service which a price tag of over £200 (including only 1 bottle of wine regrettably) warrants was below par as a one-off.

Food was 10/10
Service 5/10
