“Beautiful Irish countryside”

Reviewed 30 May 2018 via mobile

The views from here across Kildare and the curragh are beautiful. Huge amount of history here (1798 rebellion) - worth a quick stop off as close to motorway and Brennans pub is worth a visit in the evening also

Not alot of people come here - but right beside the motorway - quick and easy to find. You just get the feeling of all the history this place has witnessed. The views across towards the Wicklow mountains and out towards the Curragh are really fantastic. We stopped just as a spectacular sun was going down. Beautiful and great detail on the high cross!

However definitely worth a visit during a road trip. Located on top of a small hill with great views of the surrounding countryside. A monastery here was said to have been founded by St Patrick in the 5th century and is near to the seat of the King of Leinster. The bell tower/round tower dates to the 11th century. St Pat placed it in the care of Mac Tail (Son of the Adze) whom he ordained. The only remaining remnants today is the stump of the round tower. As we are castle and old structure junkies it was a must see for us, however still worth a look from the casual observer for its historical significance.

About a mile from kilcullen on the athy road turn left and visit this little gem. Magnificent views. Ancient tower and beautiful ancient stone. Great 10 stop off. Well worth it.
