“Open plan toilet!”
Reviewed 18 March 2013

We reserved the room that is described as having "a jacuzzi bath that is only separated from the room by a glass wall - interesting?" Not really because next to the bath is the toilet which as there is not a proper wall (small glass partition really) means that basically the toilet is in the bedroom with practically no privacy at all.

The TV was ancient and was standing on top of an old fridge that didn't work. Also the only place to hang clothes on was on a rail directly above the TV, so if you did hang things on the rail you would not really be able to watch the TV.

I appreciate that perhaps restaurants can not always be open all day every day, however we arrived Saturday afternoon at around 4 and was told the restaurant didn't open until 7 and were not offered a bar snack menu.

We did not stay the night as we had an emergency at home so am unable to make any comment regarding the nights sleep. Would not return to the Perch and Pike and would definately not recommend it to anybody.

My wife and I have stayed in a few places in this area as we have relatives in Goring. We spent one night here and found it very comfortable. The room was The Tatty Trout which overlooks the car park at the rear. The bathroom was spotless, and the shower was a proper power shower, the two things that I am very fussy about. You can hear the railway but it is not intrusive, in fact I quite like the sound a railway (modern trains don't make a lot of noise) and wondered what it was like in the days of steam. The beds were comfortable and we slept well. Breakfast was excellent, well cooked and good variety. Although we didn't eat in the restaurant we have lunched here before and found it very good.
The owners Neil and his wife were very friendly and welcoming. The bar is typical of an old English pub (fast disappearing) and the locals were very friendly as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my pint of Brakespear before bed. It is the kind of pub that Americans would like to visit and I would recommend it as it is in a beautiful part of England and well placed for walkers and for those on river boat holidays.

It's all down to expectations - and as we were spending quite a lot on what looked like a "boutique style" room with a good restaurant, we were bound to be disappointed. The room probably had been fine several years ago. It was tired with a broken shower, blind and two light fittings which were not working. An ugly T.V balanced on an even uglier mini bar fridge (empty) didn't add to the ambiance. I was worried about the close proximity to the railway line, but luckily it didn't disturb us. The dining room was charming, if a little cool and drafty. Unfortunately the young inexperienced waiter got our meals completely muddled and we didn't have a good start to the evening. However, apart from the mussels, which were obviously prepacked long life type, the main courses were tasty. The inn was well positioned for the lovely walks along the Thames Path, and the owners were very friendly. If we'd paid less all these problems would have been perfectly acceptable.

A warm, friendly welcome in a cosy inn in a pretty village.
The bedroom was perfectly comfortable.
The breakfast was really good - the fruit salad was all fresh and the cooked was tasty and filling. Oh, and the coffee is pretty good which made a nice enough change from many places.
The owners were helpful and genuine.

So, overall, nothing fancy - just a good solid inn with accommodation that delivered exactly what you'd expect for the price.

Have no hesitation recommending it nor returning at some point.

Breakfast finishes at 0900 and we were there for a Sunday morning and there was no warning about that in the room (far too early, why not 1000) - however after some sideways looks cooked breakfast was produced. the bedding needs upgrading at this price, thin duvets and man made fibre pillows at £105 per night is not good. but we were made very welcome and breakfast when a chef appeared was good enough despite plastic wrapped Golden Shred marmalade - all a bit portion controlled.

Made to feel very welcome in this beautiful village location. It was nice even in torrential rain. A little noise from the railway didn't detract from the overall experience. Food was great and all staff friendly and helpful when we were trying to sort out next stop on our route. Happy to recommend.

Stuck for something to do & see, we stopped off here for a quick drink & ended up staying for lunch. We couldn't find fault with anything. The service was quick, attentive & pleasant. There were several places to eat throughout & the restaurant itself is large, clean, bright & airy; it’s nicely sectioned for privacy & comfort.
We were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food & presentation which also arrived very quickly. The waitress, owner & chef paid good attention to detail & asked several times if everything was OK. The food was reasonably priced.
It is a lovely Inn to eat, drink or stay in (we can’t comment on the accommodation). It has a large car park & plenty of tables out side to enjoy the sun & scenery.
