“The Best of Boca Chica...Setting, View, Docs, Pool, Hacienda”
Reviewed 6 January 2013

Gone Fishing is the best of the Boca Chica area. They have the best view, grounds, pool and the hotel itself is done in a hacienda style. With a large tastefully decorated Breezy Dinning/bar/social area. If you like Teac wood then this is a must see.....Has good access to the Water via there peer and dock. This area has huge tides so at high tide no hotel has a beach but at mid to low tide Gone Fishing has a sand beach vs mud. Bruce, the owner, and his staff work to meet your needs as a friend would....do not expect top tier service...Bruce provides a friendly/owner type service and the chef cooks great food but it is done in a "home style" vs 'restaurant".
Look for the sign on the left before you get to the fishing village of Boca Chica...turn on the gravel road....and just before the end of the gravel road turn Right and look right and see the Hacienda...thru the white gate...looks like big private estate. And YES the road down is Awful for 50 feet...but it is do-able and if need be Bruce will tow you out...I can't remember anyone needing to tho...
Prices vary...expect $100...the hotel next door is $165

Gone fishing was a great find! We turned up at the last minute and were accommodated graciously by our hosts. It was a beautiful, airy place with stunning views of the surrounding waterways and all the comforts of home. The food was excellent, the staff and owner were friendly and took great care of us.

I went there with my husband and my parents that arrived from GA, it was a beautiful place but the rooms were DIRTY, my mother had an allergic reactiion due to the dusty rooms, hundreds of insects inside the rooom, dirty sheets, curtains etc, the pool was disgusting, and didnt work, neither did the wifi, we had paid for two nights and we had to leave after the first night.

Though the place is not bad, it has a nice view and food the big problem for my husband and I was the owners attitude. When we got there he told us that he had "a special room for us" and when they show it to us it was awful! Dirty, full of spiderwebs, the air conditioner was loud, the bed didn´t look clean so we asked Jonathan (a young guy ho does everything in there) to be moved to a nicer room. He couldn´t contact the owner so he contact a good friend of the owner and he send him to hell. We wanted to leave but we were stock in the middle of nowhere.
Except for Jonathan we were not treated nicely and everytime we asked for basics things to the owner, like payed the tours through him by credit card it seems like he was doing a huge favor to us.
The place has a lot of potential but it was sad to see the direction it is taking.

If you live in Paradise! We knew when we entered the huge lobby of this villa with the open air kitchen, bar and beautiful view, we'd probably never want to leave. And really that's what happened. We had such a wonderful time here that we scheduled another night days later after a trip up to Cerra Punta right before we had to turn the car in at the David airport. The owner Bruce and his staff are warm, friendly and interesting. Some local expats also make their way to the bar in the evening and are just as nice. Bruce treats his guests literally as family and that just adds to the whole relaxed feel good vibe. We stayed in two different rooms - the Clock Room (where the clocks dont work! Yay!) and the Reef Room - with sea life murals. Hammocks on our terrace completed the picture perfect island experience. The dining area is wonderful..the view never gets old either in the a.m. with coffee or in the evening with a glass of wine. Bruce, if you're reading this...when can I move in?

I was at Gone Fishing Panama the last week in October 2011. The rainy season was coming to an end and the the weather was great. The resort is very relaxing, the food was wonderful, all the staff very nice and were right there whenever I needed something. We fished everyday and caught wahoo, tuna, dorado, rooster fish and cabera snapper. Bruce and Donna were very nice and bent over backwards to ensure a first class stay.

The resort/hotel is comfortable and clean (furnishings a little dated but I can see how it's hard to get anything out there). It's hard to get to without a car (even then you have to go on a rocky/gravel road) but once there it's peaceful and beautiful. The water and surrounding islands are gorgeous. They helped us hire a water taxi for the day. It was heavenly. It was also whale season so we saw a mother and baby humpback whale up close. Then they took us to a gorgeous white sandy beach. It was really paradise. As the website says though you should bring your own food...there's nothing around. They provide breakfast (the best pancakes!!!) and will make dinner for you. Dinner was delicious. They can accommodate dietary needs if you let them know ahead of time. Overall very friendly and accommodating. Someone was always there to attend to our needs. It is pretty remote though so 2 days was plenty for us. If we had had our kids with us, I'm sure they would have been very accommodating. Seemed very kid friendly.
