This was our 3rd visit as we have always really enjoyed the food. Sadly this time I ordered the fish only to be told it was not available, so asked for the duck which also was not available. I appreciate the need for a small menu as it enables the chef to concentrate all efforts on the meals, but when 2 items are unavailable it restricts the choice somewhat. It would have been better had we been told at the start that these meals were not on rather than having to rethink the choices. I finally chose 2 starters which were nice enough but not really what I wanted. the menu in the room had a meal that was not even on the menu in the restaurant, which unluckily was my husbands first choice. It is a shame because previous visits have been amazing. Thankfully the breakfast next day was back to the usual high standard.

Dear Marion

Firstly, how wonderful that you have chosen to stay at The Bell on three occasions! We are so lucky to have such a vast array of attractions close by and on our doorstep here in Iden.
The week you came was the week prior to our next menu change for the Summer season - always a tricky one for the chefs to judge ordering in the raw ingredients. The day prior and also the lunch service was busy and this is why our Catch Of The Day was not available. Fresh fish and meat are delivered daily to The Bell and unfortunately when demand in the restaurant has been high it then means we are unable to ensure the constant supply of a particular dish from lunch service into evening service. I agree that this should have been discussed with you both once you had sat down prior to ordering - my sincere apologies for this not happening. I have discussed this with my staff and they know that this is unacceptable service.
My only thought with the 'wrong' menu in the room would be that the dish your husband wanted was on our lunch menu. I am sure that if you had have asked then our chefs would have happily made it for your husband. I would very much like you to email me directly to discuss your visit and we do hope that you will return to us for a fourth time in the future and enjoy our new menu!
We are pleased you enjoyed your breakfast the next day and glad that you enjoyed your stay in our B and B room.
I look forward to hearing from you.

We visited The Bell bar and restaurant for the first time today, a decision made by the good reviews here, and the fact they welcomed dogs, and had a fantastic experience. The food was fresh and delicious. One of our party was pregnant and couldn't eat the options on the menu and they created a completely different dish for us, which was equally as excellent as the stuff on the menu. The service was the best we've had since we arrived in Rye. Friendly and very accommodating (we arrived 20 mins late due to getting lost) it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It comes highly recommended!

It was a pleasure to look after your party and so glad that you all enjoyed yourselves. We will always try and ensure to cater for most dietary requirements and our chefs are very flexible due to our food being cooked to order. We look forward to welcoming you all back to see us again sometime - we have a Moses basket and a high chair for the new arrival too!

We have just returned home after a two night stay at The Bell. We arrived just in time to eat in the restaurant and were so impressed with the menu and the quality of the food, that we booked a table for our second evening before we left.
After filling ourselves with delicious food and great wine, it was only a few steps to our accommodation. A beautifully converted stable block. A good nights sleep was followed by a great full English breakfast.
Such was our delight with this pub that we have already booked a return visit, this time including a Sunday lunch which so many people told us was not to be missed.
Thank you John, Lindsey and all you team for such a lovely weekend. We look forward to returning soon.

We were lucky enough to be staying in Iden for a short break and just down the road from our accommodation we found this beautiful pub. We ate at the Bell for two nights running and the food, drink and service was superb. The chef is excellent. The first evening we had mussels for starters. They were delicious and enough for a main meal. I then had pork belly, so succulent and my husband had steak and ale pie which was homemade and full of tender beef. The second evening we both had fish and chips, very tasty and fresh, and inexpensive at £10 per head including a pint of beer or a wine, followed by treacle tart. All of our meals were perfectly cooked and, we think, very reasonably priced. It is so nice to find a local pub offering this kind of quality.

Was attracted to this B&B via the excellent reviews on this site. And we were not disappointed in any way. From the off, the hosts/owners couldn't have been more charming and welcoming— even the local in the bar all gave a friendly-yet-knowing nod as we carried our bags in. Presumably they'd stayed or eaten there before.
We had managed to secure one of the two available rooms (The Hay Store) which was in a smartly converted barn to the rear of the pub. Large and airy, decorated with immaculate taste and style, and included a perfectly lovely little en-suite shower room. Tv, mini bar and tea and biccies there ready and waiting, along with a complete and extensive range of info guides to the local area and attractions. It was exactly how you would want it. I think John the owner is doing himself out or a star, because I have stayed in a lot poorer alleged 4-stars than this.

In the pub itself, a well stocked bar, a decent and reasonable wine list and a cosy atmosphere was prelude to a wonderful Sunday evening dinner. We had the Roasts which were both first class, though I could have happily chomped on any of the other dishes on offer. The Desert menu is to kill for.

Our visit was topped off with a quiet, comfortable sleep, and a full English in the morning, I cannot find fault in The Bell, or its owners. Thanks so much for a memorable weekend. Mike & Kate

We popped into this pub on Sunday and were treated to a lovely lunch. Staff were young and friendly and our two dogs were very happy to curl up under the table and have a snooze. We started lunch with the game terrine and the scallops - both were lovely to look at and wonderful to eat. This was followed by the roast pork and the fish special of the day which was hake with a herb crust on a bed of smashed potatoes and a basil cream. Just lovely on both counts - and better than a lot of our local pubs in Chelsea deliver up on a daily basis! Best of all a bill of £50 which also included our wine!!! Terrific value, terrific standard of food only drawback is that it's not in SW3!
