100 metres from the main Lovina/Ahmed is "Poinciana "a modern oasis in the desert of Nth.Bali.
Delightful spacious gardens, fantastic orchids, every imaginable herb which are used by the restaurant, great carved coconut palm tree heads, lots of swaying palms, manicured lawns.
Our extremely comfortable ,modern suite on the oceanfront had plenty of day beds, lounges (inside and out)..our huge front deck a perfect spot to watch the famous ,magnificent Nth. Bali sunrises and sunsets over the same ocean.A small reef quite close to shore offers good snorkelling .
One of two sparkling pools is closeby and an adjacent covered waterfront area to enjoy a tasty lunch or a delicious candlelight dinner carried from the excellent main restaurant .Finish you dinner with a "Charles special orange liquer."
The entire resort is in the final stages of new development with the owner Ibu Nyoman very much supervising all aspects of comfort for her guests. Her hand picked staff are extremely friendly yet not obtrusive and cater for your every needs.
A lot has been spent on new top quality, colourful furnishings and furniture and everthing is well maintained.
Bali's best "non touristy " waterfall is 15 minutes
A lovely comfortable relaxing quiet resort where we really enjoyed our stay..

Room Tip: Either Beachfront .or For couple book the front two rooms of the family suite .

We had the pleasure of staying in this lovely resort on our first trip to Bali, for $50 a night, these rooms will spoil you! The grounds are lush and beautiful, the pool area is beautiful, and the massages are wonderful! The food was incredible and the staff are very gracious and helpful! I had the honor of meeting the owner, a wonderful woman! They are building on and I got to take a little tour of the additions being built, very lovely place!

My husband, Chris, and I traveled over 30 hours to get to Bali and we would do it all over again. We were originally set to stay at a villa next door to Poinciana. When we arrived at the villa next door to Poinciana we were less than thrilled. We walked next door to Poinciana and checked in to the resort immediately. The owner, Nyoman, was one of the nicest people I've met. She was quick to answer any of our questions and by the time we left the resort we considered Nyoman, Charles, Nancy and the staff at Poinciana more like family than anything else. We just got back to the States on March 20th 2013 but feel like we left part of our heart at Poinciana. We miss everyone so much.

We stayed in the honeymoon suite which was very reasonably priced and offered a fantastic view of Bali Sea as well as the gorgeous mountains. The food was wonderful and again very reasonably priced and was always hot.

The pool was refreshing and overlooked the Bali Sea so it was truly like spending a week in paradise. I've never been able to set aside my work while on vacation but I was able to do that at Poinciana. I never wanted to leave and will definitely return with my family.

My advice...do yourself a favour and get away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta/Legian and head to this beautiful resort for a few nights. Relax, snorkel, dive, fish, massages, waterfall excursion... Accommodation is lovely with a choice of rooms to suit you. The property is well layed out, staff are so friendly. Sunset is beautiful. We have been back a couple of times and plan to return again this year.

Reviewed 14 January 2013

We stayed here for five nights on our honeymoon, in Beach Villa 1, in early January 2013. We had the resort virtually to ourselves for the first three days (there was one older German gentleman staying there the first two nights, but he kept to himself and we only saw him in the restaurant). On our second last day (as in, our last night), some more guests arrived.

Having arrived at Denpasar airport in the early hours of the morning, we spent our first morning in Bali at a hotel in Kuta, and had arranged for Poinciana's driver to pick us up there and take us to Poinciana.

The driver, Ngurah, arrived early to collect us, which was convenient. He was friendly and informative along the three-hour drive to Tembok. On arrival, our bags were taken to our villa, and we were subsequently brought welcome drinks (fresh orange juice) and some peanuts.

The villa was comfortable, with a couch, armchair, coffee table and bed (all locally made in the usual Balinese style, the bed adorned with mosquito nets) in the main room. The bathroom was behind a partition, rather than being a separate room. The toilet was in a separate (and unusually large) room. There was also a small foyer leading from the terrace into the main room. The terrace had a couple of comfortable sunloungers looking out at the Bali Sea. The air-conditioner was powerful enough for the villa, and the staff were kind enough to have it running to have the room cool for our arrival.

The bed was comfortable, but the mattress a little firm (even for me -- at 130 kg, I like a firm mattress).

Our villa was less than 10 metres from the rocky beach, and a few steps from the pool and the restaurant.

As we travelled in the wet season, we didn't have the opportunity to enjoy the sea, as it was always choppy and the water was too cloudy to make snorkelling worthwhile. The pool was nice, though, during both rain and sunshine.

The restaurant was good. The food was not spectacular, but it was quite good, and the kitchen (into which you can look from the restaurant) looked very clean (just like the rest of the resort). The service was excellent (this goes for the entire resort). The staff couldn't do enough for us, and there was always someone on hand.

We enjoyed our daily breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast with jam (there were other options, but we stuck with this menu), and enjoyed lunches and dinner comprising both Indonesian and Western food. As a vegetarian, I enjoyed several dishes multiple times, but I didn't get bored. I particularly enjoyed the Mie Goreng and the spring rolls. The only dish neither of us liked was the red curry, which was incredibly salty. The green curry was delicious, though.

Based on our previous travels in Asia, we opted to avoid uncooked vegies (salads, etc.), for fear of contaminated water. We also avoided ice in our drinks the first few days. However, we talked about both of these concerns with Nyoman, the owner, on our third day. She assured us that the ice cubes were made from bottled water, and that the tap water was sourced from Poinciana's own well, and that it was fresh spring water. Given our excursion into the nearby hills, I am quite happy to believe that. Erring on the side of caution, we still avoided the raw vegetables, but started having ice in some of our drinks.

There was construction going on at Poinciana during our stay, but we knew this from seeing it rather than hearing it. Surprisingly, we couldn't hear a thing unless we walking right by it, and certainly couldn't hear it from our villa or from the restaurant. Nyoman told us that she is building a new restaurant and a second swimming pool, as well as new villas. The existing restaurant will be converted into a villa and the existing pool will be closed, restored and reopened. She's expecting the construction to be finished around May 2013.

I cannot emphasise enough how wonderful the staff was. Everyone who worked there was helpful and friendly. The entire resort was kept in immaculate condition. It was quite windy, and there were always frangipanis and leaves falling from the trees. These were seldom on the ground for more than half an hour before someone was collecting the flowers and sweeping leaves.

Two of the guys offered to take us to see a nearby waterfall. They took us on the backs of the motorbikes -- it was about 15 minutes on the road, five minutes on the bikes up walking paths and then a 15-minute walk up the mountain. They looked after us and pointed out various plants along the way. All this for just a tip at the end.

We spent the rest of the time in the resort itself, just relaxing. We had massages every second day -- the one-hour Balinese massage cost only AU$12.50 at current exchange rates. We once went across the road from the resort to one of the local "markets" (really just the little "general store"-type stalls that dot the side of the road) to buy some snacks and playing cards.

Our flight home was scheduled for 11.00 p.m., so Nyoman arranged for Ngurah to take us through Seminyak and Kuta on the way to the airport -- all up he was with us for seven hours (including two hours of waiting for us as we walked through Seminyak and had dinner). Nyoman charged us the usual 500,000 IDR fee for the airport transfer but told us to just give Ngurah a bigger tip at the end. Again, great service.

The drive from Seminyak to the airport took us through the main part of Kuta with all its pubs and nightclubs. We were so glad that we didn't stay there -- it was basically a huge mob of drunken Australians (as opposed to us sober Australians).

To be fair, I should also point out the few negatives:

1. Apparently due to the heavy rain on one of the days there (we expected rain, it was the wet season, after all), our villa lost power. They weren't able to fix it that evening, and so we were relocated into the Family Villa for the night. It was a perfectly fine villa, but it was a bit annoying to have to move. No big deal, though.

2. As noted above, the red curry was too salty.

3. Quite a few of the pool tiles were missing. However, as noted above, they're building a new pool and intend to overhaul the existing one. Nyoman said she was getting rid of tiles altogether and wanted to replace them with stone.

4. One lunchtime, we sat in the restaurant for almost an hour before anyone served us. This was quite unusual, as this was the day when there were no other guests in the resort at all.

5. On check-out, the credit card machine kept declining our cards, apparently without attempting to communicate with the bank. The staff thought there was a problem with our cards, both of which we had used at our hotel in Kuta. However, during an earlier conversation, Nyoman mentioned to us that the credit card machine sometimes didn't work when there was bad weather, and that she had previously trusted guests to transfer money after they got home. She had also mentioned that she had an Australian bank account. We asked the staff to get her (she was in her house, which is onsite). She gave me her Australian account details, and I transferred the money to her (in Australian dollars) there and then with internet banking.

6. Water pressure was minimal. You can see in our photo of the bathroom that there's no shower curtain or screen. There was no need for one, as the water was little more than a trickle. However, it was nice and hot, and enough for a (low pressure) shower. The tub looked as though it might have been a spa, but it was just an oddly-shaped bath tub.

None of these minor negative experiences would stop us from visiting there again. If we return to Bali one day (and, let's face it, we're Australian, so that's more likely to be "when" than "if"), we will definitely go to Poinciana again.

Finally, some information that I would've found useful before our trip (and which I failed to look up): Bali appears to use European power sockets (Poinciana certainly did). I completely forgot to check this, and failed to pack adapters. Poinciana had several on hand to lend us, which was great.

Room Tip: We loved Beach Villa 1.

I don't have that much to compare on Bali but I think this is a place where you get good value for money. The basics are in place and the price is very affordable. It is not a luxury hotel with a lot of imagination and sophistication but everything is clean, staff is very friendly and tries hard. Food does not throw you off your socks but you will not starve either. The massage was ok.The only real problem we had was with the airco. It blew all night the cold air on the bed and that was not comfortable and it was too noisy. Over a longer period you would probably want a bit more space on the area. Value for rather little money, I would say.

As I only visited the seaside restaurant and not the resort as such I can only comment on the first. We had some excellent Nasi Campur and Mie Goreng, priced accordingly, aroung 55K Rupiah each, more than double for what you'd pay at your local Ruang Makam. But given the surrounding, view, tranquillity and service it was worth every penny of it. Far from the regular, busy Indonesian life it looked like a place to unwind. So next time whenever in Bali I'll drop by for sure !
