I ended up visiting all of the Songtsam hotels and this was my first and favourite. I think it was because it was so out of the way and so unexpected. To arrive after a 6 hour drive from Lijiang and be greeted by a ginger tea and shown to an immaculate room over looking the terraced rice fields was a fantastic introduction.
The rooms are spacious modern "Tibetan-lite" in style, all seem to have views of the rice fields. Food is somewhat limited (barbecue night when I was there). There is little to do. The big attraction is visiting the monkeys at the local reserve. The monkeys are really rare and look like small monkeys zipped up inside big fluffy monkey suits. Hard to explain, but they look like no other monkey or ape I have ever seen. Sightings of the monkeys are based around very narrow viewing times, so check the recommended visiting time to avoid disappointment. The reserve is an upland temperate rainforest and has good walking beyond the monkey observation spot. The only other attraction is to walk up to the village (a mixture of Naxi and Tibetan). I had a delicious lunch in a local farmhouse, with grilled fern heads as a main dish.More
