“Take your breath away!”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

Welcome: They stand by the entrance to welcome you even before you arrive. 2-4 people will receive you and you will feel very homely at once with all their greetings. The moment you enter the lodge, the open windows with scenery will take your breath away!

Food: The dishes were varied and they prepare a very generous portion for us as a couple. We always had enough to eat and they will tell you the name of the dish as they serve you. If we don't have enough, they will always prepare to cook another plate for us till we are satisfied. We are so grateful!

Staff: All the staff are gems there. They serve with a smile and they obviously are hospitable. They have excellent service attitude and when they say goodbye to you when you leave, you can really sense that they want to welcome you back again. They are able to establish rapport quite easily with guest and we can feel they do their work with their heart.

Room: There is a big sofa bed at the bottom level and a bed on the upper deck. Stairs are quote steep, so just walk carefully. It's well-lit, no problem. There is no TV there to distract you from enjoying nature. Nice room wall features to take oriental photo shots.

Environmental friendly : They gave each guest a pair of shoe to walk around the lodge and we can bring it back at the end of the day. Upon arrival, we must change into their shoes. This is very good as it will keep the area clean at all times.

Amenities: Boiling kettle, wiifi, tea. Good enough. Need other beverage, call the staff, they will bring up for you and clear it for you when you need. They will prepare mugs ice-covered so that you can enjoy your drink better:) No swim pool, gymnasium. It's ok! The day hike around is very good! Do exercise the traditional way!

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we miss it. It's a lodge with a few number of guests only so you really feel well taken care of.

We love Songtsam Tacheng! It was definitely worth the trip especially with great guide leading us in Tacheng and Shangrila Songtsam Lodge trip. Thupden was dedicated in his work and establish great rapport with people, having a sense of humour and always so patient with people.

Looking forward to the next tour Songtsam circuit if possible!

After spending four nights in Beijing and two nights in Lijiang we began the Songtsam segment of our private tour with this Lodge being our first and favorite. We arrived in the rain and were warmly greeted by the staff with umbrellas, smiles and ginger tea. After being provided with our slippers, we were escorted to our room which was was absolutely beautiful! It was large, with modern amenities, but had the "lodge" feel to it with a private balcony directly overlooking terraced fields with mountains in the distance. The food was comprised of multiple courses and lots of delicious fresh vegetables! We did not have a bad meal on any of our stays with Songtsam.

What really made this lodge standout, however, was the staff. They could not have been more welcoming and gracious. The evening we arrived, we were treated to a home visit where we met a family and even stayed for dinner. After seeing the monkeys in the morning (which I highly recommend), it was raining enough that we had to cancel our afternoon hiking. This was a blessing in disguise – we spent the afternoon in the lounge/dining area next to the fire relaxing and even had a cooking lesson making moon cakes. We all laughed and had so much fun even though there was somewhat of a language barrier. We heard a beautiful voice singing from the kitchen and we asked if she would sing something for us but she was a little bit shy. She gathered up two of the other staff and together they sang a lovely Tibetan song.

In the mornings, we woke up early due to jet lag and made tea in our room and had tea & cookies on our balcony as the sun was rising. It was truly a magical time visit relaxing at the lodge, eating delicious meals, and interacting with the wonderful staff! We hope to return again someday but until then, thank you to the lovely staff at Songtsam Tacheng!

We didn't know what to expect since this lodge seemed a bit more lacking tourism interest compared to the others. However we really enjoyed our stay: the rooms are the best, huge, big balcony and nice view. The food was the best we had and the dining, living area is so charming. The place has a nice pool but it was too cold at this time of the year. If you want to see the monkey do go early otherwise you will see them from far: Chinese tourist are not very respectful they just go and annoy them in the trees so the monkeys tend to go away.
Overall a very peaceful and relaxing stop!

I ended up visiting all of the Songtsam hotels and this was my first and favourite. I think it was because it was so out of the way and so unexpected. To arrive after a 6 hour drive from Lijiang and be greeted by a ginger tea and shown to an immaculate room over looking the terraced rice fields was a fantastic introduction.

The rooms are spacious modern "Tibetan-lite" in style, all seem to have views of the rice fields. Food is somewhat limited (barbecue night when I was there). There is little to do. The big attraction is visiting the monkeys at the local reserve. The monkeys are really rare and look like small monkeys zipped up inside big fluffy monkey suits. Hard to explain, but they look like no other monkey or ape I have ever seen. Sightings of the monkeys are based around very narrow viewing times, so check the recommended visiting time to avoid disappointment. The reserve is an upland temperate rainforest and has good walking beyond the monkey observation spot. The only other attraction is to walk up to the village (a mixture of Naxi and Tibetan). I had a delicious lunch in a local farmhouse, with grilled fern heads as a main dish.

We booked the 'Family Summer Package' directly through Songtsam website. As a family of 5, this was a more convenient alternative than doing the more treacherous/ higher altitude itinerary (Three Parallel Rivers, which includes Meili lodge). There was another family of 4 in our group, so we had two vans for transportation.

Over 7 days we stayed at the lodges in Tacheng, Benzilan and Shangri-la. We had a wonderful time! Although it can be difficult to please everybody in a group, we all enjoyed the trip. We were surrounded by beautiful scenery and luxurious, comfortable accommodation; we were served delicious, home-made food and all members of staff treated us so well and were so friendly! The children (from 7 to 17 years) also had a great time learning about Buddhism and Tibetan traditions and playing 'treasure hunt'.

It was a trip of a life-time. Dolma and Gesang were great guides. They picked us up from Lijiang, looked after us constantly and were always ahead of what we might need, very attentive and thoughtful. Lousang and his brother drove us through bumpy roads so carefully, sometimes the cliffs on the side were very steep and scary but they made us feel very safe.

Our favourite activities: seeing the Golden Monkeys, visiting local villages, picking fruits from the orchard, singing with the locals while we waited for the rain to stop, walking on the mountains, hunting mushrooms, chasing butterflies, taking a 'mooncake' cooking lesson ... Ah! the pool! ... Watching hotel staff sing and dance to Tibetan music, walking along the rice terraces ... the list is endless! It was fantastic!

Our family of 4 (kids aged 12 & 7) spent only one night here in mid July and wished we could have stayed longer.
The whole lodge is beautifully designed and decorated and looks out on to beautiful fields and hills around. We used it as a stopping off point to visit the Yunnan snub nosed monkeys but would have liked to stay and relax there longer.
They have a pool but unfortunately it was not filled when we were there.
The outstanding food was sourced from their own gardens and local producers and was (I think) all organic. It was lovely to eat locally grown, simply prepared, healthy food - a real delight. We found the staff to be welcoming and courteous and the whole place had a lovely restful air about it. I would definitely recommend it as an alternative to the usual Dali/Shaxi to Shangri La/Lijiang travel route.
The only disappointment we experienced was whilst visiting the monkeys. The monkeys themselves were fantastic and we marveled at how close we could get to them, however despite having to pay for and use a local guide to visit them, the behavior by the Chinese tourists was nothing short of disgraceful. They were noisy, shouting, smoking and on two occasions throwing rocks at the monkeys to get them to turn around so they could photograph them! The local guides stood by and did nothing. Hopefully these ignorant attitudes will change with time, as this kind of wildlife viewing opportunity is definitely a jewel in China's crown.

Dear Guest

Thanks for staying with us and providing the feedback.

We have spoken with their management and let them know that they need better training with their guides and stricter enforcement of the rules and regulations to protect the endangered monkeys. We will not hesitate to stop sending guests there if the situation does not improve.

Meanwhile, we try to advise tourists to be more responsible when travel to the wild. (e.g. We write up entries on this issue on our Chinese social media accounts.) Hopefully, the situation will improve and more people take responsible travel here in China.

Once again thanks for sharing the info. with us.

We visited all of the Songtsam hotels on our recent trip. They are all wonderful. Tacheng is no exception. Set just below a village with opportunities for walks into the hills, this hotel is peaceful and comfortable. Like all of the Songtsam Hotels in the chain the staff are very friendly, warm and welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay memorable. We recommend this hotel to anyone travelling in Yunnan.
