Truly wonderful hotel, from the beautiful design to the fabulous staff who were so friendly and went out of their way to help (but never in an intrusive way).

The food was excellent, we are vegetarians but this didn't phase the chef who prepared course after course of wonderful fresh dishes for us. And I'll always remember the packed lunch - I could barely carry it it was so big!

I cannot rate this hotel highly enough, I loved every minute and hope to return one day.

We stayed at 4 of these hotels recently and this was smaller but so comfortable and peaceful. Actually has a small swimming pool and very well cared for pretty grounds. Views not as dramatic as some of the others but not as high up either and no need to worry about altitude. The food was delicious and very varied. Staff very friendly and helpful, many from the nearby village. Highly recommended.

We spent Christmas here and amazingly were the only guests! Apparently December is a low month although I have no idea why - stunning weather and as it is a low season for farming there is plenty going on in the villages (weddings, house buildings etc). The hotel has a beautiful location and we went exploring the villages above and below the setting during our stay as well as a longer trip to see the snub nosed monkeys and the Tibetan village up on the ridge (a 5 hour walk back with our children 4 and 6 through villages and stunning landscapes, past prayer flags and free range pigs - quite a memorable Christmas Eve!). The hotel is very comfortable and the breakfasts are good. The food became a little monotonous as we stayed here 6 nights but also because as the only guests there was not much choice in the kitchen. The children and I went to explore to see what we would like to eat and the shelves were pretty bare. The bacon was delicious though. We live in Shanghai and speak some Mandarin which was useful as for the first 4 days we were there none of the staff were able to speak English. It was slightly disappointing not to have someone who could tell us more about the area but we made up for it on our last day. There is a 1 star for the swimming pool as I think it has probably been turned into a fishpond. Certainly there were fish in it when we were there.

Room Tip: There is a family room with a double bed up on a platform and space for two singles below. All rooms...

This is the beginning of my Songtsam Circuit (19 days & 18 nights). Mr Wang Shi (Songtsam Driver) arrived at Bruce Chalet 45 minutes ahead of pick up time & waited patiently for us to check out. Shy, quiet, soft spoken & skillful, he drove 4 hours (very scenic drive) from Lijiang to Tacheng. He stopped several times for us to take photos (eg. viewpoint of Yulong Snow Mountain, first bend of Yangtze River & at a rock which resembles a chicken). Staff from Songtsam Tacheng lined up at the driveway to give us a heart-warming welcome. They called Mr Wang Shi earlier and knew that we are starving. As it was 3 plus in the afternoon, we helped ourselves to the high tea spread. In addition, they warmed our growling tummies with beef noodles. The noodles tasted awesome as the soup is full of flavour. Room is spacious, cosy & clean. From the room we have views of the mountain and a thousand year old Gingko tree. Relaxing on the huge daybed with a cup of rice / chamomile tea in hand while taking in the view is such a bliss. Sitting at the balcony is just as nice as the weather is cool. We relaxed at the balcony & watch the locals tending to their crops and cows grazing. In the late afternoon, we took a 1 hour walk to the local village by ourselves. Lunch / Dinner at the restaurant is tasty & wholesome. We never got tired of the food as the kitchen try very hard to vary the dishes. Four dishes & one soup are too much for us but no worries, you can always order more if insufficient. Breakfast is just as good (eg. eggs with sausage & bacon, noodles, toast, cereal, yoghurt, stir fried vegetable, porridge, local bread etc). We took two day tours from the hotel, Da Mo Cave & viewing of the Yunnan Snub Nose Monkey plus Bazhu Village. Mr Wang Shi drove us to the Da Mo cave. He has to tackle winding dirt roads all the way up to the temple. Another Songtsam staff accompanied us carrying our lunch (eg. sandwich, fruit & yoghurt) & bottles of water. He explained the rituals that the locals will perform at the temple & along the path which surrounds the mountain. We had picnic on a grass patch before arriving at the cave. Unfortunately the cave was out of bounds as there are some renovation works. 4 hours walk around the mountain was easy & refreshing as it’s cool at the altitude of 3000 meters. We enjoyed the greenery along the way. Viewing of the Yunnan snub nose monkeys can be tough or easy depending on where the monkeys are. It was drizzling & we have to walk 2km on a slippery & muddy path with the ranger in the National Park. Caretakers threw food to lure the monkeys down. It was quite tiring standing on a narrow path & holding the camera to shoot. We waited quite a while before we could capture some decent shots as the monkeys’ back was facing us. Walk at Bazhu village was easy. We did not walk back to Songtsam Tacheng as it rained in the morning and staff advice that the route back is muddy and slippery. At Bazhu village, we had the opportunity to see & experience the local’s way of living. Back at the hotel, staff offered to clean our muddy shoes while we relax at the lobby with cookies & coffee. Staff are incredibly warm, thoughtful & obliging, nothing is too much for them. For 2 evenings, we were the only guests in the hotel. Felt as if we have booked the entire hotel (Ha! Ha! I am not complaining).

In May this year (2013) we did the Songtsam Circuit, staying last at the lovely Tacheng Lodge. The rooms were great, with big windows opening on to the rice paddies lying between green mountains. Staying at Songtsam Lodges you only wonder at what possible surprise the next lodge can have in store, given the high quality of each of the hotels. In Songstam Tacheng we felt the surprise was luxury and location. We were first taken on a tour of the village by the hotel staff, visiting homes, gardens, fields and learning about the complex ethic and religious culture of Hada village. And finding out the location of each of the homes of the hotel staff (the chef's home was most impressive). We were taken around by Miss Yang (also a Naxi) who did a great job as a guide. We also did the two guided excursions offered by Songtsam at Tacheng: the tour of the Tibetan Bazhu village and a visit to the golden monkey reserve. Both were well worth doing. The monkeys live in the wild, high up in the mountain forests, close to 3000 m, and appear on schedule in the mornings to be viewed - fortunately not many tourists there.
The Bazhu village tour was very interesting, as we were driven up there and then walked down some hours back to the hotel. The forests were full of rhododendrons, and it rained lightly on and off during the walk. Our guide told us amusing stories during the whole trip. A good hike, not difficult, about 550-600 m altitude difference downhill.
The hotel food was mainly sourced locally - the village ham is one of their specialties, as is organic rice, honey (supplied from the village to the whole Songtsam chain) and the vegetables. The food was great - healthy and tasty (the latter most important to us, at least on holidays). The dining room also had huge windows that were opened right up so we could enjoy the panoramic views. Songtsam Chairman Mr Bai Ma was there and showd us some of the wildlife photos he had just taken from the windows. On our last night the chef baked us an apple pie as a surprise, and the staff came into the dining room and sung some Naxi songs. Next morning when we left they sang a farewell song for us again. We departed for Lijiang, very reluctantly, but with the safest driver we had experienced in China.
If you are going to visit Tacheng and flights work out for you, I recommend driving from/to Shangrila rather than Lijiang - closer and cheaper.
We have to congratulate all of the staff of Songtsam, including the lodge manager, and also their hardworking CEO Ms Jia Liming, on the great job they have done at Tacheng. I hope travellers can appreciate how difficult it is to run such a set up in areas that lack (or at least once lacked) a lot of basic infrastructure.
I think there are a lot of interesting excursions yet to be discovered in the vicinity - we hope we can get back soon!

Welcome: They stand by the entrance to welcome you even before you arrive. 2-4 people will receive you and you will feel very homely at once with all their greetings. The moment you enter the lodge, the open windows with scenery will take your breath away!

Food: The dishes were varied and they prepare a very generous portion for us as a couple. We always had enough to eat and they will tell you the name of the dish as they serve you. If we don't have enough, they will always prepare to cook another plate for us till we are satisfied. We are so grateful!

Staff: All the staff are gems there. They serve with a smile and they obviously are hospitable. They have excellent service attitude and when they say goodbye to you when you leave, you can really sense that they want to welcome you back again. They are able to establish rapport quite easily with guest and we can feel they do their work with their heart.

Room: There is a big sofa bed at the bottom level and a bed on the upper deck. Stairs are quote steep, so just walk carefully. It's well-lit, no problem. There is no TV there to distract you from enjoying nature. Nice room wall features to take oriental photo shots.

Environmental friendly : They gave each guest a pair of shoe to walk around the lodge and we can bring it back at the end of the day. Upon arrival, we must change into their shoes. This is very good as it will keep the area clean at all times.

Amenities: Boiling kettle, wiifi, tea. Good enough. Need other beverage, call the staff, they will bring up for you and clear it for you when you need. They will prepare mugs ice-covered so that you can enjoy your drink better:) No swim pool, gymnasium. It's ok! The day hike around is very good! Do exercise the traditional way!

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we miss it. It's a lodge with a few number of guests only so you really feel well taken care of.

We love Songtsam Tacheng! It was definitely worth the trip especially with great guide leading us in Tacheng and Shangrila Songtsam Lodge trip. Thupden was dedicated in his work and establish great rapport with people, having a sense of humour and always so patient with people.

Looking forward to the next tour Songtsam circuit if possible!
