“Overpriced and Underwhelming”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2009

Apparently any small hotel (i.e., not part of a large chain) can now label itself a "Boutique Hotel." If an overpriced, small, unclean room with outdated fixtures is your idea of "boutique" then this is the place for you. There is nothing unique or charming about this "Inn." We have stayed at Inn by the Lake ("IBTL") twice this season and after our latest visit will definitely not return. We chose to try IBTL because we have a Snow Bomb discount card. But even with the discount, we paid $125 for a room in the back of the second building with a "view" of the rear parking lot and a trailer park. I'm starting to think that it is this hotel's policy to place guests with discounts in the worst possible rooms because we were placed in virtually the same room and location on our first visit. During our latest visit we had to have the duvet replaced because it had what appeared to be blood stains on it. When we received the "replacement" it was a wrinkled duvet (i.e., comforter) without a duvet cover. Also, it took more than 30 minutes to receive the replacement duvet because there was only one person on staff working at 9 p.m. To make matters worse, the bathroom floor was dingy and had a dark mystery stain on it (don't ask). To be fair, the bi-level Jacuzzi is nice and it is convenient to have a balcony, even if it overlooks a trailer park. For the price you can do a lot better and probably get a complimentary continental breakfast in the bargain. That's right - you can't even get a free waffle at IBTL before you hit the slopes. If you decide to stay here, don't forget the disinfecting wipes.

Thank you for your return patronage. It is unfortunate that your second visit this year was not as pleasant as your first stay. Please accept our apologies. Your Snow Bound discount card entitled you to a precentage discount on a variety of room types at different prices and featuring varied views. Apparently, you chose a propetty view standard queen on both occasions. Hope this clears up any confusion. All our units feature Perfect Sleeper Serta bed sets with white duvets. Sorry about the apparent stain and our response. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first negative posting we have had on our housekeeping in memory. So you can save those disinfecting wipes for another time and place. .
Regards,
Dan

We visited this hotel 12 years ago and decided to go back as we were staying in Tahoe for a few days before driving to Mammoth. Well this hotel is so run down and we were very disappointed. I almost forget how far it is from the hub of things, 3 miles I think. Yes you can get the buses but they charge you - is nothing free these days? Staff at checkin however very helpful and Hungry Bear fantastic. We ordered the pancakes and they were to die for so thumbs up for them which was great. We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the trailer park which was dire but it was onyl a few days. The lake is across a very busy road but its really lovely. Tahoe has really changed since we were last there and its becoming a lot like Blackpool in the UK therefore we wont be in a hurry to rush back. We visited Mammoth and its just beautiful and untouched so I would recommend this area to anyone although its beautiful 2.5 hour drive but so worth it.

Sorry that we failed to meet your expectations. The Inn opened in the early 80's and we like to think that it is kept in very good condition. With interior corridors, central HVAC and units ranging in size from roughly 300 to 1,100 sq. ft. it would be impossible to rebuild at todays construction costs. The Inn's location is in the center of South Lake Tahoe directly across the street from El Dorado Beach. If you consider the casion core the "hub" of things this is not the place for you. Now on the other hand, should you be looking for a true Tahoe experience - give us a try.

Dan

My husband and I decided to stay at Inn by the Lake because of its moderate price and proximity to the shops, lifts, and casinos. We were very pleased with the hotel. The room was a nice size, the bed was amazingly comfortable, and there was ample parking. I interacted with the front desk staff three times (check-in, check-out, and another time on a utensil search) and each time the ladies were friendly and accomodating. Lake Tahoe is directly across the street from the hotel, and there is a nearby access staircase that takes you right onto the beach. Our room view was a bit lacking, as we looked out directly onto the trailer park behind the hotel, but we were on the third floor so that was nice (and I believe you pay more if you want a view of the lake). I have read in other reviews that the hotel can be noisy, but we never encountered any noise at all. They also have a small workout room with a few cardio machines, which was convinient. I would definitely recommend Inn by the Lake to others.

Thank you for your kind comments concerning your recent stay at Inn by the Lake. Yes, most of our lake view units are quite large and priced higher than our standard property view queen rooms. We refer to April as our spring shoulder period. Ski season comes to a conclusion and we await summer. However, Tahoe is beauitiful this time of year and should you visit ask at check-in for a free upgrade to a lake view unit. Tell them Dan sent you...

We stayed for 7 nights in January 2009 and were impressed with the hotel. The room we had was on the third floor with a good view of the lake. The rooms are particularly large and we appreciated the robes. Breakfast can be taken at the Hungary Bear and the $3.00 voucher each guest is given means that a great breakfast may be had for a reasonable cost. The location is good with the ski shuttle leaving nearby although if youhave a car it's easier to drive to California Lodge. There is a pub nearby which serves reasonable food. The only complaint we had was the noise level in the room. The walls are obviously extremely thin and so even the slightest noise from adjacent rooms - people talking in normal voices or snoring- can be easily heard. When we experienced such problems the staff were happy to move us to another room. This was possible as the hotel was not full.

The staff at the Inn were so polite and helpful, we arrived after 27 hours of travelling and were placed in a room which had the groan of the heating/air conditioner compressor right outside our door. After a short time we went to reception and asked to be moved, they gave us a large room with a lake view. We were so pleased with the new room until neighbours moved into rooms either side of us, the noise was un-believable, it was like something you would expect on an 18-30 holiday in Ibiza.
We could hear every word, including all the bad language until the early hours, (3-4 am), the walls are paper thin. some people like to holiday in peace, thats why we chose an out-of-town location, the trouble is with the keen prices on offer it attracted party goers. The rooms were kept spotless and the maids were so polite, only other gripe was the breakfast served on polystyrene plates with plastic knives and forks.

Thanks for your kind words and very constructive comments. Please accept our apologies for the noise which disrupted your nights rest. The Inn is the only three star and one of the few properties in South Lake Tahoe with interior corridors and a central HVAC system. Couple this with fully insulated interior/exterior walls and it usually spells quiet. However, we did have a fan coil unit acting up in the hallway near your original room assignment which was serviced. Sorry about the lack of consideration shown by your neighbors at 3 to 4 am. Typically a call from our front desk will resolve a problem of this nature. We have a no-party policy in our guest room buildings. Visitors wishing to party the night away more often than not find the Casino Hotels more hospitable for this purpose. We do not give second warnings but dispatch a security officer to take the appropiate measures. Admitedily, loud TVs, cell phone conversations or loud voices can sometimes be heard from one room to the next - similar to what may happen in a well build private residence. You will be pleased to learn that we have closed our continental breakfast room where we did not have the facilities to provide china and silverware. Bear Beach Cafe now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Best Regards,
Dan

After a miserable experience with an online service I called Inn by the Lake directly. The lady I spoke with, Rosie, was very helpful accommodating to our last minute changes and managed to book us a lovely room at an xlnt price. Once we got there, the staff at The Inn was very pleasant and helpful with everything from ski rentals to dining options to a good sledding hill. The view of the Lake is beautiful view, but best from the 2nd or 3rd floor rooms, The Inn has plenty to do and places to eat within walking distance without being in the fray of hotels and shops that along the State Line. The Bear Beach Cafe, which just opened next door was also great. Aside from offering good food at good price, the warm and attentive service there brought us back for breakfast each morning we were there. They were not open for dinner at that time, but the menu looked good and reasonable.

Thank you so much for your posting. Sorry about the difficulties you experienced with a 3rd party online reservation site. We try to be selective. Glad to learn that Rosie and our Team were very helpful. Always great to note that ones efforts do not go unnoticed. Bear Beach Cafe in addition to breakfast and lunch is now open for dinner. We appreciate the opportunity to have hosted your family's recent holiday.

Dan

A couple friends and I stayed for Christmas to do some snowboarding and get out of the city for the holiday. The room was very clean and had a very comfortable bed. The jacuzzi outside was perfect after a day on the hill as well. There is a restaurant onsite that opened this week called the Bear Beach Cafe, we had breakfast there one day and lunch the next. Great food and service to go along with the great view of the lake. All 4 of us would highly recommend the hotel and restaurant to anyone traveling to the area.

Thanks for your very kind comments on the Inn and our latest addition - Bear Beach Cafe! It took us a while to find a local operator that could match the view from our restaurant building with equally great food & service. We are glad we waited and look forward to welcoming you back to Inn by the Lake.
