“Great Tahoe Lodge!”

Neils and his staff have really hit a home-run! Staff is great, location is fantastic (you're across the st from Heavenly Village base, which is where the gondola to the top of the mountain is), and the breakfast is really a bonus. My biggest pet peeve with hotels, is bed comfort, and Basecamp has some of the comfiest and warmest beds I've ever slept in...especially comfortable after hitting the slopes all day. The hot tub on the top deck is crucial as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony...extra room for the ski gear.

This place has a great feel to it -- beautiful rustic-modernized design with terrific details. The owners couldn't be nicer. Comfy beds and great vibe with an outdoor fireplace and several communal spots for hanging out.

Basecamp has hype, but it's not undeserved. An old motel reimagined for 2013, Basecamp is the perfect spot for young families, couples, and friends. For the whole of a long weekend the quality of people -- staff and guests -- was superior, and a perennially great vibe hangs over the place.

What you need to know:
(a) convenience -- just a 10 minute walk from the Heavenly gondola, and parking is ample.
(b) brimming with style -- enormously comfortable communal lounge features wide leather couches and plasma TVs, details like reclaimed wood shelves and tables give it a modern mountain vibe; fun art and reading materials in the room and lobby remind you to have fun.
(c) social -- the lobby is like a big living room full of new friends; the bar is cozy and serves tasty microbrews; the hottub upstairs was always welcoming to all (and clean)
(d) value -- it's a great deal. period.
(e) good for groups -- previously we've VRBOd a big cabin for a group of friends. Basecamp wins. It's cheaper, you've got all the common spaces but also more privacy in your room; plus you don't have to clean up or cook.
(f) did I mention the food? -- complimentary breakfast features really good strong coffee, teas, pastries, bagels, fruit, oatmeal and yogurt. They also do dinners, and ours -- tri tip, chicken, portobellos for the vegetarians, beans and salad -- was great. (Could have used some cornbread though).

A few quibbles: The TV in our room was staticy, but that was getting fixed soon. This is a new hotel, so sometimes there is a new-room smell about the place (better than an old room smell I guess, and the place is VFC free). And though the walls seem plenty thick, the architecture of a motel means you can hear other people easier than, say, if you were in a suite at the Ritz.

Do yourself a favor and go.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the hottub will be quieter. Second floor is fine but third floor was a bit of a hike...

Basecamp Hotel is a great idea that has been perfectly executed. The owners are a young family that have converted an old motor lodge into a fun, friendly and well-designed hotel that provides a warm and personal alternative to the high-rises and casinos in the area. Located just a short walk from the gondola at Heavenly, the hotel perfectly captures the feel of a mountain base camp, with a common space where skiers and other travelers can meet and from which a communal revelry naturally emanates. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly, and to top it all off, they have a hot tub.

Basecamp Hotel is a trendy and well appointed motel that caters to those looking for a fun place to spend the night.

Nestled between two run down motels, Basecamp Hotel immediately comes across as a breath of fresh air. Staff were incredibly friendly and casual, but made sure everything was in order and that you were well taken care of. The main building has a small bar, a couple of communal tables, and a living room atmosphere by the fire. Prices for drinks were very reasonable (especially during happy hour when they were half off), and there was a nightly fire to roast 'smores on. Our group of friends actually spent most of the evening having drinks at the bar and if you're lucky enough to book early, there's a communal dinner available several nights of the week.

I stayed in a Two Queens room which was large, warm, well lit, and had everything you'd expect from a trendy motel: flat panel TV, iPod dock, worst-case scenario guide book, and quality bathroom products. No complaints, although if you're a light sleeper, you might want to bring along a pair of ear plugs. Breakfast is included but simple: granola, oatmeal, bagels, and jam.

Overall, I'd definitely return to Basecamp if I'm in the area.

This is such a fun concept... we stayed in a room with a tent over our super comfy bed.. lanterns, picnic table... plugin cracklin firelogs... SO FUN.. and NO bears! Plus toasty warm and comfortable. We loved it! The facility is great and the location is incredible!!

Room Tip: I highly recommend trying to reserve the great outdoors room! Lots if sunlight and the theme is well...

It lived up to my expectations which is not easy for somewhere in Heavenly to pull off!
The hotel is absolutely gorgeous and the staff are exceptional.
Best bits-breakfast, bar, balcony and hot tub.
Bits for improvement-heated towel rail in bathroom another hot tub at the other end of the complex.
