“Never get tired of this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2013

Came back twice this year, one smaller break and then this week beginning of August, the only downside of the place is that you need to drive quite some time to get there after leaving motorways, but it is really worth it.
Smiling and helpful staff, from the reception desk to the restaurant waiters, amazing surroundings and view, nice small Garfagnana villages around. The Spa and the internal pool area are a welcomed addition to vary activities. The external pool is big and clean, and staff is super-friendly there.
You can also get the car (or jog there if you're fit...) and get uphill to the Sport Centre which features (other than another very good restaurant) a couple of soccer pitches, horse-riding facilities, an archery field, and other sports facilities.

Room Tip: Parts of the hotel - amongst which the external rooms - have been renovated to Marriott Internationa...

Attended a conference there. Conference buffet breakfasts included cold meats, cheeses, breads, cereal, yogurt, and whole fruit. Hot food included eggs, tomatoes, sausages. This was included with the conference, as was lunch and dinner (each, also buffet, included pasta, meat, potatoes, veggies, and for conference food it was VERY good). A colleague had a special request and was served what she called the best gluten-free pasta each night (in a variety of shapes). The hotel is nice, with a lovely pool, but if you want to travel I think you need a car, because the driveway is 2 km long up a steep hill, and the nearest town (Barga) is a 3 km hike (I did not do this; I was told this - you don't have to walk up the driveway but it's still uphill). On weekends they have a shuttle, but you'll be pretty much stuck at the hotel with its incredible view. About the view: it never gets old. It was spectacular in the early morning. It was incredible during the day. It was amazing at dusk, and gorgeous after the sun went down. It was beautiful in the rain. It is simply one of the most beautiful views from the top of a hill that you will ever enjoy. The week we visited it was incredibly hot, and the room A/C was not quite up to the job. We did not complain, and hopefully you will not have such brutal heat when you visit. Our room (313) had a very comfortable bed (Marriott quality) and a very nice marble bath with a large stall shower.

My advice, if you're visiting here. Get some wine, coffee, and fruit to enjoy in your room (there is a kettle to heat water and a instant coffee/tea is provided; I do not know about restocking because we didn't use it). Stay a few days to relax and unwind; enjoy the view. Enjoy the food (I predict the non-buffet food will be great because of the good quality of the buffet food...of course even mediocre Italian-prepared pasta is pretty good by American conference buffet standards...), and move on when it's time to start touring.

Lucca (lovely, lovely) is about a half-hour by car. Barga is close, but I doubt you'll want to visit more than once (lovely small walled town).

Room Tip: Ask about the view. Our room (313) had a nice view, but some have SPECTACULAR views. Some have bal...

What an oasis. Pure beauty and elegance in a Tuscan setting with fabulous mountain views. If you want peace of mind, kind and helpful staff, great food and fantastic service, this is the place to go. The biggest challenge you will face is getting your rental car up the mountain. Once you are there, your worries are over. A dip in the pool, a sip of great Italian wine and all of the tension disappears. What are you waiting for? The breakfast was wonderful and the complimentary fruit smoothie was perfecto!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the side of the hotel overlooking the outdoor pool and the mountains

Spent three days at resort using Marriott vacation points. Was not dissapointed at all. Hotel staff was vey attentive, professional and provided immediate help in assisting your every need.

Hotel has two restaurants which are good, but for local flavour drive to Barga is worth the trip. You do need a car as this location is up in the hills( view of countryside from hotel,is awesome). Town of Lucca is only 45 minutes away and Pisa and Cinque Terra are all within easy drives ( local highways no tolls)

A good place to just unwind and relax, all with the Marriott standards we all appreciate

Stayed 4 nights in Florence and then proceeded to rent a car from Florence airport to drive to Barga/Lucca area. Should be approximately 1.5 -2 hour drive however my "inner blonde/directionally challenged" had us driving for 5 hours. Pay attention to the signs to Lucca and even if you don't see one for a while know that most likely you are on the right path to the hotel. Big mistake to turn around as we backtracked a lot. Boy was I happy once we started the drive up the BIG hill to the top and saw the Renaissance. Note you MUST have a car when you stay here if you want to explore the town of Barga and/or Lucca. Trust me when I say they are easy to find locations from the Renaissance Hotel and parking at both places was very easy.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and had two rooms. One room booked with AAA rate, "executive view, larger guest room" and the other using points, "classic room". We were put on the 6th floor with rooms next to each other. While the classic room was very nice and executive view had a balcony overlooking the pool and the valley. Outstanding view and loved having coffee in the morning listening to the roosters down the hill sing their morning songs. Nice that room has electric hot water kettle to make coffee or tea.

My teenage girls loved that there was a pool and enjoyed late afternoon swims. Hotel also has an indoor pool and spa which my husband and girls said were very relaxing. I loved the layout of the hotel and the grounds - simply beautiful to explore.

The beds were heavenly - while staying in Florence we thought the beds were very hard; so the comfortable and soft beds added to a great stay.

The hotel staff were OUTSTANDING. From suggesting restaurants, to where to buy wine, to giving us easy to understand directions to both Barga and Lucca, they were happy to help us in any way.

Breakfast was very good and loved eating on the patio overlooking the valley. We did have cocktails in the bar - nice atmosphere (drinks somewhat expensive). Wifi worked perfect on the property as well as hotel room. I am Marriott gold member so did not have to pay for wifi in the room otherwise I believe there is a daily charge.

I have nothing negative to say other than I wish I could have stayed an extra night.

Room Tip: As others have mentioned, a room in the main part of the hotel overlooking the valley is awesome. S...

First off, nicely renovated hotel. It's always iffy in Italy. You pay a fortune for a five star that's not quite what you expect, it's shine probably worn off 40 years ago. But they really did a nice job renovating the main areas. The price value was amazing. We are a family of 4 kids ages 8 and 4 and had a suite on the 4th floor. Our room was not renovated, it had the old carpeting and curtains, a queen size bed on a king size bed stand so that was a bit strange and unpleasant. The sink drain was slow and after we complained they came and fixed it right away. We also complained that the shower curtain was filthy, they also took that off and did not replace it the rest of the week, claiming that it was being cleaned(does it take a week to clean plastic curtains?) Shower in the tub did not really function properly, but we were able to shower. My husband asked for turn down service and they have no idea what it is. My husband also checked out the other rooms and they claimed that non of the suites are renovated. We would of had to change to smaller rooms with a connecting door and paying more. There is no safe in the room. It was dirty under the sofa from the last guest. The saving grace were the 3 large floor to ceiling windows in our two rooms and the size. There were also 2 balconies. Our friends came later and also had reserved a suite. They said they had almost no windows and with the unrenovated room they could not stand it and changed to a renovated smaller room. I also had a massage in the SPA. Most of the ladies did not speak English at all and I asked repeatedly for a firm pressure massage. My therapist just did not get it. After repeating myself I actually got up and showed her what firm pressure was as she was just lightly brushing her hands over my body, thinking it was the language barrier. She still did not get it. And all this after she was 15 min late for 50 min massage. She ended the massage early and of course I complained. The spa manager was nice enough to offer me a shoulder massage with another therapist who did a decent job. The gym was ok, with decent equipment. Their wellness area is small and minimum. I guess we let the room slide because of the price we paid. We also spent a lot of time out of our rooms playing golf(20 min away), tennis, mountain biking, horse back riding, all 5 min from the hotel. They have a decent pool with a nice view and there were enough cute towns around for a few visits. We were eating in the hotel restaurant but after 2 lunches and dinners we had tried everything on their decent but limited menu. Then we headed to Barga the rest of our stay where they had more restaurants. There were quite a few conferences going on but we didn't feel the crowd. All in all, it was enjoyable as we had fun, and since we didn't pay too much, we were happy with the value. Besides the front desk and restaurant not many spoke English in this American chain, but the service was not bad for Italy.
