There is a history to ROSS CASTLE , Old Castle...- several ghosts are said to haunt it - including - The Black Baron, Myles Slasher O'Reilly, and the young lovers - Sabena and Orwen. who decided to run away, as their families belonged to tribes who fought and each other. They went for a last trip - out in a boat on Lough Sheelin, prior to running away, - when a sudden storm blew up and the boat overturned - Orwen was drowned and Sabena died a of a broken heart a few days later. On your approach to Ross Castle, you can see where they were buried together.
Many people have heard Sabena crying, and sense her presence in the castle. Footsteps and the moving of furniture are also frequently heard by guests. - So if you want the experience and are brave enough - this is the place for you! The castle is decorated with interesting antiques, indeed a full suit of armour is the 1st thing you see when you enter.
Sam and Benita Walker are the caretakers - but they dont stay in the castle at night - they return to their own farmhouse close by.
You have use of the kitchen to prepare meals for yourself, or the local Chinese take-away does a delivery to the castle.
There is heating throughout the castle, and a large open fire in the sitting room - logs and turf are supplied for this.
In the morning you are wakened to the scent of a large farmhouse fry being prepared by Benita, for whatever time you have requested breakfast.
I hope to return in the near future! Thank you for your hospitality Benita and Sam......
Sam and/or Benita will tell you and give you directions to other interesting places in the locality.

Room Tip: view from the tower bedrooms overlooking Lough Sheelin are beautiful - but the circular staircase ca...

We stayed in the top of the tower and it was so much fun. It really had the feel of an old time castle. Benita was a gracious host. Make sure to have the four course dinner... she is a wonderful cook!

Excellent directions from Benita, found it right away. We were staying the night with one other couple there. Very comfortable and the grounds were beautiful!! We stayed in the lower tower room, very cool and a little spooky,
Lovely antiques throughout and the breakfast was excellent.

Directions provided were outstanding but I still managed to get lost, I felt so bad because I could not let Benita know as my cell did not work there. Accommodations were fantastic and were definitely a highlight of our trip, my son spooked himself out reading guest reviews about ghosts lol. Benita and Sam were incredible and their hospitality was overwhelming. The peat fire took me back many, many years when I was a boy growing up in Ireland. My wife is a professional cook and was very impressed with the quality of food that Benita and Sam provided to us.

Room Tip: Go for the tower rooms, it really enhances the castle experience

I enjoyed that this castle looked like a castle inside and hadn't been "moderned up". We were the only people staying at Ross. It was comfortable, nice host, but could have used a good cleaning. Loved the location and the scenery.

My family spent a night in Ross Castle for my son's 11th birthday. He wanted to sleep in a "real castle" and it is. We slept in the upper tower room. The whole place is furnished with antiques, there are great views across the lake! The rooms are comfortable, and the place definitely has an "atmosphere." It was downright spooky at times! Quite an adventure! We had the whole place to ourselves!

Want to experience a night in a real Castle this is the one to choose. The Castle originally built by the Nugent family is delightful. The tower is the place to stay, it is quiet comfortable and offers an experience that is hard to find in the day and age. Benita and Sam made us feel welcome and were very knowledgeable about the history of the Castle and the surrounding area. Food was made to order and delightful. I suggest you order your dinner as well, as Benita is a great cook and restaurants are a some distance away. D&G Canada.

Room Tip: Choose a tower room it is an experience of a lifetime.
