“great just for the entertainment value”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

We visited this well as 2 families with two 12 year old's it was fun trying to find it, as the signage isn't great but as previous reviewers have said a lovely area to wander around. What a crazy off the wall place when you come across it! the kids thought it was fab --it is really bizarre but had a real odd feel to it --quite eerie really with all the hanging fabric and odd messages. We really enjoyed this little area -- very easy to miss if you blink you miss it. We drove past it 2-3 times before stopping to investigate well worth the hour taken to visit.

“Ancient Celtic Well with healing powers”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

We stopped by to visit the well while on a tour of the area. Our guide explained that the well's water was believed to have healing powers. One would dip a piece of cloth into the water and then tie the cloth to a branch of a nearby tree in hope of healing an affliction.

While in the past, the strips of cloth were of natural fibers and would eventually disintegrate, today's offerings are made up of synthetics which will last for quite a bit of time. Because of this, the area looks like some scene out of a horror movie.

We saw that some people also tossed coins into the well.

“4 Stars for being a hoot”
Reviewed 10 September 2013

You'll need to watch carefully for the sign to the Clootie Well, but it's worth the trouble. We picked the wrong path to walk (take the first path on the left as you enter the parking area) but it was one of those "good" mistakes as it took us on a 1/2 mile walk through beautiful forest land.

The Clootie Well itself is just wonderful. Everything from bras to bed sheets to sneakers, all adorning the shrubberies. Some people didn't get the whole idea of the rotting clothing bringing on better health, as they wrapped synthetic fabric around the limbs meaning, if you actually believe this stuff, that the victim will take a century to get well as the fabric remains intact.

Visually, it's just great.

The Clootie Well which is located on the road between Fortrose and the A9 has become very messy and dirty with al the rags that people arrach to the tree. You might want to go by and wrap a rag aroun a limb, but no loner fun

“Always Wondered”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

Always wondered what this attraction was about when passing. The well area itself is not for everybody but I and my eight year old enjoyed it. A more mature couple behind us weren't so keen. The theory is you tie a clootie (or rag) to a tree near the well for good luck. Visitors have taken to tying all sorts to the trees and this doesn't appeal to everybody, also some visitors put money in the well.
Even if the well is not to your taste take the time to do the walk around the area. There is a lovely stream at the bottom of the hill with seating carved out of tree trunks.
