“clean and comfy room”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

we stayed here for 1 night. the room looks smaller at first but it was comfortable enough for four adults. the only downer is that the heater is not functioned and it was during early winter, it does get cold at night. fresh towel and bedding is provided.

The place felt like a holiday camp rather than a youth hostel. The staff were very helpful and the food was excellent, the rooms and toilets were also very clean. Would recommend this to anyone. The only downer was that one of my roommates snored very loudly but the hostel cant help that.

I've never stayed in a Youth Hostel before and was expecting a 'scout hut' type experience. How wrong! There were 11 of us cycling the Tour routes and based here for two nights.
The rooms were spotless and had a better shower than 90% of 'upmarket' B&Bs (though I would recommend taking an extra pillow). The breakfast buffet was, again, better than most hotels and served by very helpful staff. Having a communal kitchen area and secure bike storage meant we all could prepare and get organised easily with everything we needed for the ride.
Staff were helpful and we didn't hear any noise as all the guests seemed very sensible!
I don't normally bother with reviews but we were all massively impressed and wanted to say thanks for helping make it an amazing weekend up north.

Stayed here for a couple of nights during half term. Great location for cycling into York and exploring the town, even in the rain! Only niggle was that the games room was closed so no TV before bed and limited stuff for the kids.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay. Apologies about the games room - it was closed due to water damage which is now all sorted and the games room is redecorate and up and running ready for your next visit!

Part of a group doing Way of the Roses cycle challenge (the YHA is actually adjacent to that route)
We had 2 adjoining "courtyard rooms" each which could sleep 4 people - configured as bunk downstairs and double in mezzanine. Standard of accommodation and bathroom facilities was comparable to budget hotel eg Ibis but at a much smaller cost !
The YHA is very large has a big cycle store as well as great food and its own bar which is open all hours
Staff were extremely helpful and polite.
About 20 mins riverside walk into the city centre.
I think we will be back

Despite this being a youth hostel, it is more expensive than some of the city centre b and bs, but I stayed here years ago and lived the walk along the river into town. Plus, it has recently been refurbished.

However, the room is very small, the service painfully slow and we cancelled the breakfasts after day one as it was so dreadful. Cold food, no juice and poor choice for vegetarians.

Disappointed.

We chose the YHA at Clifton for a recent lads trip to York. We booked 2 x rooms that slept up to 5 adults in each room. Check-in was swift and the girls on reception were friendly, offered plenty of advice and seemed really good fun too! Rooms were clean, modern and the bunk beds surprisingly comfy. City Centre is about a 15-20 minute walk along the banks of the river which was very pleasant. Think the taxi back was just over £5. We didn't eat at the hostel but heard other guests complementing the food. Nice, friendly, relaxed atmosphere at a very affordable price - would definitely stay here again :)
