“Very good place for Way of the Roses riders”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

We stopped off here on the way home from the Way of the Roses ride.

The hostel is about a 10 minute walk out of the city centre. It has a very impressive reception area and seating outside. The room that we had was very nice and clean though you do have to make your own beds up.

They offer bike storage to which we needed and the bar serves decent beer. The breakfast was very good and worthwhile having too.

Its budget accommodation at its best - just make sure you book early enough though if you want a room of your own!

They went out of their way to help in any way they could the staff are an absolute credit. The hostel was very clean and so were the rooms its the first time my wife and I stayed in a hostel and it definitely won't be the last I was really surprised in every way .good food and drinks not expensive. I would definitely recommend the yha york 10 out of 10 from me

I stayed here with my friend for one night in June whilst exploring York for the weekend. The rooms were clean and modern. All facilities were great, nice bar, breakfast was good. I joined the Youth Hostel Association for about £15 and got a discount on my booking. We would have stayed longer but the place was fully booked.

Rooms have 1-6 beds and facilities include restaurant, bar, self-catering kitchen, laundry, Internet access/Wi-Fi, TV lounge, games room, and wheelchair facilities.

There was no evening curfew which was nice and the other guests were a mix of cyclists, school parties and single travellers. There is always a slight worry when you stay in a mixed dorm with people you dont know but I find this one of the best ways to travel and meet new people.

A very safe, secure, tidy hostel with plenty of friendly staff members on hand.

Room Tip: South facing rooms in summer may be slightly stuffy but dont let this put you off. Just sleep in you...

Great friendly staff, clean, comfortable beds and lots of space. Unfortunately it was way too hot in the bedrooms. I have never attempted to sleep in such a hot environment ever - and I'm from Australia. We barely slept and had to get up a number of times during the night to drench ourselves in water in an attempt to cool down. I would stay again in winter but never again in summer. Essentially we paid money to stay awake all night.

I stayed here for my hen night as a party of 6 and booked a room for us all to stay together which had 3 bunk beds in it. The room was clean and spacious, beds were comfy and we had our own sink, toilet and shower which was excellent. A few of us did use the communal showers and they were equally great and we didn't have to wait at all to use them.
The breakfast was good value (£4.99) although the sausage and bacon didn't look the best. There was plenty to chose from though from cereal, toast and a cooked breakfast with juices and tea/coffee. We made a snack in the communal kitchen which was very clean. The night we stayed there was a large group taking over the whole kitchen but we didn't need it thankfully (it is quite small).
As the weather was very rainy, we got taxis to and from the hostel into the centre of York which cost just under £10. It would have been nice to take a walk along the river as people said that this was a lovely route.
The only reason 5 stars isn't given is because the room was incredibly hot! We were told that the refurbishment added extra insulation as it was cold in the winter but at times it was unbearable when we were getting ready or trying to sleep! The two windows that only opened a little provided no ventilation.
Overall though I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. My first experience of a hostel has been a very positive one! :)

The only thing that stopped me giving this 5 stars was that the dorm we were in (private room) faced south and I suppose was badly insulated but whatever, it was boiling boiling hot when we visited in summer. Apart from that, this is just what a hostel should be. Big friendly space for people to meet, very clean, large common room where you can order bar meals (which are up to good pub standard) really nice staff, good grounds, games room, and handy location. A walk along the river to the national railway museum or into York itself. It only takes about 5 mins on the bike. I really can't think of much wrong with this hostel except for the super heated room

We are a family of five so we booked a 4 bed family room and I had a bed in the male dorm. The hostel is spacious clean and airy. But critically both the dorm and the family room were very stuffy. The windows had cables attached so the small windows could only be opened a few inches. We really needed to swing them right open. The food was good and the staff excellent.
